G Armstrong Constable Tho Ilutchilisou The above is the complete ticket of the Republicans for municipal officers to be voted for at the coming election The convention of the Second ward occurred conventon last night while the First II Third Fourth and Fifth held theirs last night I Ulnier In the Flist The convention in the First ward was a lively one and excitement ran high I during the balloting for justice which resulted ultimately in the nomination of F M Ulmer after Justice Sells the present incumbent had started in along a-long way in the lead l While there was much excitement in the balloting it was confined to a spirited rivalry between be-tween the friends of the various candidates can-didates and did not at any time partake par-take of the nature of a dissension George Buckle was selected chairman I chair-man and Harry Lytle secretary The report of the credentials committee which was adopted showed sixtysix votes in the convention fiftynine delegates I del-egates and seven proxies When nominations were reached the names of Eber Case W 1 RIsler Mort G Taylor W H Sells F l I Ulmer and E E Shepard were placed before the convention The first ballot bal-lot resulted Sells 30 Risler 9 Taylor 4 Ulmer 13 Snepard 6 and Case 1 During subsequent ballots Justice Sells supporters deserted him when i became be-came evident he could not be nominated nomin-ated and one after another of the candidates can-didates drew out till on the sixth ballot bal-lot only Ulmer and Case were In the race On that ballot they stood tie and on the next Ulmer was nominated receiving 35 votes to Cases 31 There were but two candidates for constable Soloman Crown the present pres-ent incumbent and Mr Hurd Crown was nominated on the first ballot getting get-ting 45 votes to Hurds 21 A motion was made to go into caucus cau-cus and choose the ward representatives representa-tives for the committees in the county convention which waG voted down and the convention adjourned Third Irecinct The Third municipal precinct convention con-vention was held in the Seventeenth ward school house and the business was disposed of with neatness and dispatch dis-patch there being no contests William Will-iam A Holman was renominatel by acclamation for justice of the peace and J M Haslam was renominated for constable in the same way Both candidates made very brief addresses ad-dresses thanking the convention for the honor conferred George A Smith was chosen as the ward representative on the credentials creden-tials committee at the county convention conven-tion and Frank Emory as the member mem-ber on the permanent organization and order of business I Fourth Ireeinct The Republicans of the Fourth municipal muni-cipal ward met in the Burlington school hones W R Hutchinson presided and H S Ellerbeck acted as secretary The proceedings were short and harmonious harmon-ious John W Greenman was nominated nominat-ed by acclamation for justice of the peace and J S Higham for constable aIm by acclamation and the meeting adjourned Immediately after which a private caucus of the delegates from the various precincts in the ward to the county convention was held Twenty I six delegates out of a total of 42 were present S W Morrison was chosen as chairman of the caucus and also a chairman of the Fourth ward delegation I in the convention J B Farlow was named as a member of the committee on permanent organization at the county t coun-ty convention J J Stewart member of the committee on credentials and FredA Fred-A Hale member of the committee on resolutions The business before the caucus was the selection of parties for the endorsement endorse-ment of the Fourth ward delegation for nomination for the legislature George N Lawrence and Joseph Lipp man were named for members of the lower home and were endorsed by acclamation ac-clamation E G Rognon was named for the senate sen-ate and received the unanimous endorsement en-dorsement of the caucus The favored three responded and stated stibstan ially that they believed in silver pro ection and reciprocity and that of j the three Issues I silver was the chief I and Joe Lippman suidMio United States senatorial aspirant would receive his support who was not for silver first last and all the time and above everything every-thing else The caucus then placed its seal of approval ap-proval on Harry Josephs for county surveyor and adjourned Fifth Precinct Fifth precinct Republicans acted just as though they were holding a real convention con-vention in the deliberations which resulted re-sulted in the selection of George G Armstrong for the office of justice of the peace and Thomas Hutchinson for constable The doors of the vacant store room I where the delegates assembled were not open when the main portion of the un terrified assembled but a bold member succeeded in effectng an entrance and I the crowd poured in There being no chairs the delegates stood Bernard Springer who was a candidate for the i second place I on the ticket sought to I win votes by procuring a lamp which wag all the light which shone in on the I benIghte visions of the miniature multitude mul-titude but even that didnt win I W P OMeara opened the proce < dIngs d-ings by placing in nomination Daniel I H Wenger for the position of chairman chair-man which suggestion was agreed tote to-te delegates being in unusually good I humor H P G Coates was elected to do the coarse handwriting on motion of the same person who appeared to be running the works I was decided not to have any committee com-mittee on credentials but to call the list of delegates as published In the delegates publihe te pa pen and mae corrections a the read ing progressed It was noted that whenever a womans name was called she answered by proxy There was not a single females in attendance or a married one either for that matter I The list being called Fred W Den 11il il i nis moved the convention proceed to nominate a candidate for the office of justice of the peace which being declared de-clared the order the chair called Al Simondi to the seat fee was holding down and proceeded to nominate a man for tie position in the person of George G Armstrong S of D Cady varied the monotony the usual custom by naming a person per-son who was In all ways fitted John D Kelson Frank McGurrin placed the name of that eminent patriot and jurist that able and astute attorney Peer Loch rle before the convention and then the vote a taken s Peter and John were not In it at all Armstrong was selected on the frS ballot by a vote of Armstrong 4C Locfcrle 9 Kelson S < Armstrong was declared the nominee and made a speech In which he trustsd he would fill the place t the ability and satisfaction of all who participated in Ills selection thank elecion you There was a squabble over the position posi-tion of constable Mr Ellerbeck nominated nomi-nated Thomas Hutchinson Kimball named Bernard Sprenger Hugh Smith raised his silvery tones to advocate the claims of Thomas I HSU HSUThe first ballot was a waste of paper Sprenger received 19 Hill 21 l and Hutchinson Hutch-inson 20 More sheets were torn up and amdd cries of Hmo the second vote was taken which showed Sprenger 17 Hutchinson 26 and Hill 20 On the third ballot Hutchinson and Hill tied with 25 while Sprenger only polled 13an unlucky number for him Hutchinson got there on the next ballot bal-lot toy 1 vote of 4 to 22 and all his friends and everybody elses cheered except Sprenger who made a few desultory des-ultory remarks under his breath Having got their hands in the delegates dele-gates elected a few more people and amid much excitement Hugh Smith was made chairman of the delegation Thos H Hill member of the committee on credentials at the committee tomorrow tomorow beating Frank McGurrin a Brown man by an enormous vote I J OMeara was chosen for the committee on permanent per-manent organization beating Joe Collie and Charlie Stanton selected for the committee on resolutions The convention then urged itself into the chilly night Sprenger took his lamp home and peace reigned I |
