Their convictions resulted from the work of the Intelligence Division of the Internal Revenue Service which this month is marking its fitieth anniversary. Head of the intelligence division in Utah is Jack T. liiggenbotham, an Ogden native, who has held the position since 1951. He has been connected with the Intelligence Division since 1941. when he was sent to Washington, D.C., to work with Elmer L. Irey, director of the agency since its inception in 1919. P.O. INSPECTOR In 1919, the Secretary of the Treasury and the Postmaster General arranged for the transfer of six post office inspectors to the then Bureau of Internal Revenue. One of these, Irey, was chosen to head the new Intelligence Unit, and he became a famous law figure in American enforcement for his work in jailing gangsters who had otherwise eluded prosecution.
