Murdock, one of the band of Mormon pioneers who entered Salt Lako valley in tho fall of 1S47. died yesterday noon at. his home in IMilfortl, according to word received lust night by Mrs. Ii. C. Lund of Salt Lake, a trranddauirhtor of tho nionoor. Mr. Murdock wub S7 years ot age. Death was caused by paralysis and followed nn illness of onlv two weeks. Mr. Murdock fs said to havo brought moro immigrants intot Utali thau an' other ono man. he having been captain of immigrant trains in tlio enrly days. Ho took an active part in Utah affairs af-fairs all his life;rand hold various public pub-lic offices, boing tho first maj-or of Lchi, mombor of tho conventions which framod and adopted tho Utah constitution constitu-tion and member of tho first house of representatives. Ho was an active Tndian fighter in the days when tho pioneorB fought for their homes. Mr. Murdoch was born September 13. 1820. in Ornngevillc, Ohio. Ho joincu the Mormon battalion in JS4G and in the fall of 1847 camo to Salt Lake, passing the first winter horo. Tho next spring he went back to moot Brig-ham Brig-ham "ioung's party and oscortod them into tho valley. Ho lived in Salt Lake sevoral years and then moved to Lehi, of which town ho was tho first mayor. Murdock acatlomy, the church school in .Beaver county, is named for Mr. Murdock. In 1880 ho purchased the land and buildings of tho abandoned military post, Fort Cameron, from the government. His intention was to give this to the Brigham Young university for a branch school. Later, however, ho decided to start a separate institution, institu-tion, nnd in .1807 tlio academv was ! founded. Since then Mr. Murdock j gave much toward maintaining the Institution. In-stitution. The docodenl. was a member of the Trans-Mississippi congress and a member mem-ber of the irrigation commission of the Chicago world's fair in 1893. Ho iB purvivod by his widow. Mrs. Mary E. Murdock, and seven children, fivo sons and two daughters. The children are Joseph li., George C, Orrico A., Charles 33. and John E. Murdock, Jr.; Mrs. P. T. Fnrnsworth nnd Mrs. .William De Wolfe. Twenty-six grandchildren and eight great-grandchildren also survive. Funeral services will be held Sundny at Beaver. |
