Happy Sesquicentennial sesquicentennial Utah! Clinton forgot Big Macs in Escalante was hallucinating. All I was pres. Bill Clinton addressing questions from a bunch of hostile Utahns. Maybe 1 of a sudden last week Mr. in President, announcing the Grand Staircase-EscalantNational Monument, you spoke of how during a family vacation you were perched atop a rock in the middle of the Grand Canyon. It was a dramatic reference, but was that story really true? Yes. There was in the canyon all alone. It was kind of like being a Democrat in Bountiful, Utah. Now Utah Republicans have been critical of you for not inviting them to the announcement. Why instead did you appear with Robert Redford? Because Sharon Stone was e Ion WOMF he promoted the creation of Yellowstone National Park. Those and grizzly hunters werent too pleased with him. But he listened to his conscience. And youre listing to your old-time- I Id rather listen to my conscience than listen to the babblings of Orrin Hatch. See Sen. Hatch is from Pittsburgh and if he had his way, our national parks would be known for their production of soot. But you lied when you said one day prior to the announcement that you hadnt made up your mind. You did lie, didnt you? place behind Ross Perot again in Utah, I just might consider making all of Utah County a national park. You 're kidding, Mr. President. Never admit you lied...I learned that from Hillary, too. But you don t care about the pmnlnl impact of your announcement? You realize, don t you, that families won 't be able to enjoy recreation with their ATVs? I love ATV. I was on that network during the last election. No, Mr. President, that was MTC. See, your misinformation will hurt the people living in the Escalante area. A1 Gore tells me most of these folks living down there are either pig farmers or polygamists. Neither are much of a vot- Im ing bloc, so frankly not too worried. Theres nothing you can tell me that will make me change my mind. Except this, Mr. You President. understand that by banning development in the area you are precluding the construction of a McDonald's franchise anywhere for the 1.7 million miles? Now wait one dam minute. I told you that I hadn't ruled out anything. A Big Mac is part of our national heritage. ..Ill get back with you guys later on that one. Thanks to Bountiful community for supporting square dancers proposal saved Utah land Editor, I would like to express my thanks to everyone in the city of Bountiful who was instrumental in helping us make our square dance at the Bountiful Post Office on July 23 a success. JaLynn Simpson m values development and short-terprivate profits to the long-ter(including economic values) of conservation, our children and later generations will be grateful for your vision and commitment to preserving our precious natural resources. Such preservation is what responsible stewardship of our public lands is all about. m Ross C. Anderson Voters seem unable to seek out, find good, moral candidate Editor, banner which What's right with the United States? A fine represents the courage of the original British colonies in declaring independence from Mother England, and a star denoting recognition of each of the fifty states. It not only is the national flag, but individually is our great symbol of liberty and freedom from despotic rule, and a Constitutional Bill of Rights. What's right with America, as we choose to call it? A feeling of dignity for everyone who lives here, and quality among men and women everywhere. What is wrong with us? It appears to be the apparent inability of most voters to recognize the importance of seeking out and finding a good moral candidate to elect as president. The latter office wields as much influence as the Congress, andor the Supreme Court, the body whose membership is nominated by the chief executive, to win the approval of the Senate. We do not seem to realize that when our candidate for president promises every thing to everyone, such must be paid for, and it is the individual citizen who is expected to foot the bill, a fiscal irresponsibility. In this manner are we spending ourselves into financial ruin. In November lets put aside Socialism, Communism and Humanism, and vote for the men and women who will go on record for Constitutionalism, that we may once again know what true moral and financially property is. W. G. rs conscience? Dam right. Nope, that dog won't hunt. (SNICKER) But if President Clinton The people of Utah are fortunate to live near spectacular and unique protected lands, including Zion, Canyonlands, Capitol Reef and Arches national parks. Dinosaur and Cedar Breaks national monuments, and the many other extraordinary national treasures within Utahs borders. Our lives are deeply enriched by the preservation of those lands. Those lands have been preserved because, in the past, people with wisdom, courage and vision acted to protect them for later generations. Since Theodore Roosevelt, national monuments have been designated or expanded by Presidents, acting under authority of the Antiquities Act, 66 times. We in Utah have benefited greatly from such designations. National monuments within our state have included Natural Bridges, Cedar Breaks, Dinosaur, Arches, Capitol Reef and Mukuntuweap national monuments. (Arches and Capitol Reef later became national parks; Mukuntuweap later became Zion National Park.) I commend and support you for your bold, visionary proposal to designate the Kaiparowits Plateau, the Grant Staircase, and the Escalante Canyons as Canyons of the Escalante National Monument. So you don 't really care about all the Utahns who are calling you names? Not at all. people thought Teddy Roosevelt was a jerk when the event to millions of American homes. That being the case, who would you rather be seen with: Robert Redford of Jim Hansen? Hec, I dont think Congressman Hansen even has a dimple. So you re admitting that the national monument announcement was just plain political? I dont admit nuthin...I learn that from Hillary. Is there any truth to the rumor that your action is a response to coming in third place in Utah during the 1992 election? Editor, "per-pupil- es, More appropriate, maybe but not more appealing. My friend, its an election year, and 1 knew dam well that Id be surrounded by Clintons 'bold, visionary I am puzzled by voucher proponents who claim that vouchers will benefit the public schools because the amount of the voucher would be less than the amount spent on that pupil for a public school education. Because public " schools are funded on a basis, when a student does not attend the district receives no money for that student. Voucher proposchool, public nents don't seem to realize that the amount of a voucher will be a net loss to the public school system, impacting the amount of money available for schools. Students who choose to attend public schools will lose and those who choose to attend private schools will gain. How can this kind of choice" benefit public schools? I am so puzzled by the idea that vouchers will foster competition which will make all schools improve to attract students. The w hole idea of competition between public and private schools is seriously flawed, because the two systems are inherently unequal. Private schools often select their students based on academic achievement. They can and often do reject students who may be lower achieving, learning disabled, or have behavior problems. Some for enrolling a private schools require parental involvement as a student. Public schools must accept every student who wants to attend, and in fact are required by law to provide special services to students with special needs Sometimes public school students are disruptive, unmotivated and challenge the authority of their teachers. Would private schools want to compete" for those students? In fact, vouchers benefit only a small select group those who can afford to pay the difference between the voucher and the cost of a private school education. As long as we embrace the idea that children are entitled to equal opportunity in pursuing an education, we must protect the resources available to public schools who provide that opportunity to every child. Because vouchers provide an additional benefit to the students in our society who are already most advantaged, some critics have called them welfare for the rich." Every adult who has benefited from a public school education should be wary of voucher plans and the threat they represent to public schools. wed raise the intelligent quotient of Utah County by you think it would have been more appropriate to invite a Republican official? Vouchers or tax credits for private education are a bad idea There has been a great deal of debate recently about the subject of vouchers for private schools. I support completely the right of a parent to choose a private school and think that many of them offer excellent programs. However, there are some compelling reasons why vouchers or tax credits for private education are a bad idea. Public schools in this country exist for the benefit of every individual. In the United States we offer an education to every child because it benefits us all when we live in a society. Taxes paid by parents are not fees paid for serv ices directly rendered to their child. If this was the case we would not require a tax contribution from people who have no children or whose children are no longer in school. Because ever) successful adult has benefited from growing up in an educated society, all adults pay taxes to continue this benefit for future generations.
