Many semifi at School Washington Elementary students got a good look at an oxen team and wagon recently from Dixon Ford, a Farmington resident. Ford participated with his oxen in the "Centennial Wagon Train" across Utah during this summer. He brought his team and wagon to the Washington Elementary playground and demonstrated how he has trained his team to obey voice commands and how the oxen are yoked together to pull a wagon. All of the students had a short ride in the bed of a work wagon, learned about authentic pioneer clothing, and met a one month old calf that Ford is beginning to train. Shown are Ford, Mrs Cummings and Cambria and Caroline Cummings as they help yoke the oxen team. How to concentrate when studying How can I concentrate better when I study? Answer by: Terry Teigeler, Utah State University Extension director of Ogden Education Center for Graduate Studies Have a special place that is set aside only for studying. Go to the same place at a regular time. Make sure your study environment is equipped with all the necessary study supplies before you begin. Reduce external distractions by taking the phone off the hook, getting away from background noise and telling others to take time out from talking to you. Accept internal responsibility for your study activities. Avoid daydreaming. Put a paper next to you to record distracting ideas that can be taken care of later. Take sides on issues you read about to help create interest in what youre studying. Find relationships between old interests and new materials. Study small sections at a time to help you master specific ideas rather than trying to master large sections of material in a short time. Take planned, short breaks as a relief and reward. Make long term and short term rewards that are an incentive for accomplishing a specific learning activity. Work on the most difficult material when you are the freshest. Eat appropriately and sleep enough so your study time is focused and used most profitably. Study with others when possible in small, focused groups. nalists will qualify for university scholarships by virtue of this semifinalist status. Finalists will be announced toward the end of this school year and will be in line for prestigious scholarships at major colleges and universities in the nation. The semifinalists from BHS include: Dan Anderson, son of and Margene Raymond Anderson; Jonathan Blackhurst, son of Wallace and Barbara Blackhurst; Danielle Brown, daughter of Mark and Alyson Brown; Jeffrey Davis, son of Douglas and Susan Davis; David Dick, son of Gordon and Yolanda Dick; Jared Fields, son of Roger Fields and Souzanna Carroll; Anne Frederickson, daughter of Hyde and Kathy Frederickson; Laura Murphy, daughter of Alan and Janet Murphy; and Eric Nelson, son of Gary and Annette Nelson.
