Show TilE COBDEN CLUB FAKE The other day THE HERALD referred to the fact that one of Its McKiNLEr contemporaries contem-poraries had published with great glee the I statement that one DUDLEY who said that While at the Cobclen club I learned that a decided effort was being made to defeat McKINLey for governor of Ohio and if money can do it it will be done No specific amount has been named but 1000000 can readily be scoured by voluntary contribution contribu-tion = We expressed surprise that even robber tariff editor should be so ignorant or so reckless as to publish such a statement inasmuch as everybody who knows anything of the facts knows that the Cobden club has no establishment house or rooms and is not a club in the sense that we understand the term It appears ap-pears that the Now York Evening Post which charged with being in the pay of the Cobden club ran across the story and proceeded to hunt Mr DUDLEY up in order to ascertain just where ne found the club DUDLEY is an exconsul who resides at Camden N J and thither the Post dispatched dis-patched a reporter who found the gentleman gentle-man sfter much difficulty Presenting the item quoted above the reporter proceeded pro-ceeded to ask Mr DUDLEY explain when the latter confessed that he had never been at the club and in truth he repudiated the story He had never heard any Cob denite say anything about sending money to this country to defeat MCKINLEY but he had no doubt they would be glad to dot do-t As MCKiNLEy Is using this DUDLEY statement as a campaign document of course knowing to be false in every particular par-ticular the great apostle of the robber tariff must feel like his case is desperate |
