Show THE REAL DOLLAR PAROYTAN Utah Sept 16 1S31 To the Editor of THE HERALD To settle a dispute please answer the following follow-ing question It is contended that the present American dollar contains one dollars worth of silver barting out the alloy Contrariwise it is contended that the present dollar contains only SO cents worth of silver barring the alloy Which is it now 60 cents or a dollars worth of silver in the dollar Respectfully R E QUARM The present dollar contains SO cents worth of uncoined silver only It takes 515 grains uncoined silver to buy 412 grains after being coined A dollar in gold bullion or coin is 258 grains The government is not permitted to coin gold for itself but does so on demand for private persons whereas the treasury department coins all the silver it wants for speculation So long as silver coinage was free there could be no difference between the ooined and uncoined metals tho same as with gold but speculation was promoted by the suspension sus-pension of silver coinage and hence the double currencies of unequal value The brownbacks one of the kinds of paper money issued by the treasury department at the rate of 860030000 a year are worth only SO cents on the dollar and they have practically become the only currency and L they are redeemable in silver the act of July 11891 declaring that the secretary shall coin of tho silver bullion F as much as may be necessary to provide for the redemption of the treasury notes herein provided for |
