The Region winners from North Sevier are Beth Holt, Extemporanious; Markay Johnson, Steven Kiesel, Wonda and Jeanie Steele in Legislative Forum, traveled to the State Speech meet in Provo. The competition was a little better than that at Region, but the overnight stay made up lor that. The kids did well with Beth Holt taking the only Superior in Extemporaneous and Jeanie Steele receiving an Excellent. These two worked hard all year and it paid off at Provo. The Juniors are getting a little excited over their Prom, as they hold dance practices during the week. Big plans are being finalized, and they look forward to decorating. In November of 1939, Dan was working at Cherry Creek in Nevada in a silver mine and he was involved in a mine accident and lost his sight in both of his eyes and his hearing was For 18 years, he impaired. could only tell night and day. He received some sight from this operation and with the use of strong lense glasses, he was able to see forms and to distinguish colors. This lasted until 1965, when the graft clouded up and once again he had another cornea graft. This operation was much more successful and with the use of glasses, he had 20-vision for some time. This was like a miracle to Dan his family. After he received his glasses, he eyed his wife up and down. Even after getting seriously injured in the mine explosion, he came home from the hospital and went to work doing things with his hands. With the help of his loving and faithful wife, he constructed a miter box so he could saw boards straight. He made a youth bed for his first two sons, turkey coops and many other things. Dan has been very active in Church and civic organizations. He was Justice of the Peace in Aurora for four years. He served on the Aurora Town Board as a councilman for four years and at the present, he is serving his third year as Mayor of Aurora. He is a member of the High Priests Quorum. They have had several enjoyable Dan trips, overnight horse-bac- k water skiing and have made two trips down the Colorado River, staying several days each time. He is very enthusiastic about sports and has helped the boys in basketball and in softball and helped them to get their uniforms. Last year, Dan and the boys remodeled the old Scout Cabin on the park and made it into a Recreational Center for the youth and the town people of Aurora to enjoy. Dan has always loved horses, loves to ride and looks forward each Fall to going on the cattle round-u- p. His "pride and joy is a big, spirited Morgan he calls "Red. He was instrumental in helping to start a Couples Riding Club in Aurora several years ago, just for pleasure. This has been a lot of fun for couples, young and old alike. At the present, there are 32 couples who enjoy a ride on their horses and dinner once a month during the spring and summer months. Dan's grandsons enjoy riding horses also, and they think Grandpa is the greatest because he always has a horse ready for them to ride and always time to go with them. He has one granddaughter also, who likes to go riding with Grandpa. He has a pony Duke that all the named grandchildren claim. He has been a member of the Salina Chamber of the Blind for many years and was to the late Pres. Clarence McDonald. Dan has really enjoyed the Talking Book Machine put out for the use of the blind and has read hundreds of books of all kinds. They have given him many hours of entertainment. He has a dog named "Joe which he really enjoys, especially for the pheasant hunt with his sons. Dans hobbies are dogs, horses and boys. Of course, he lets his wife go along to drive him where he wants to go. He loves to water ski with his sons and grandchildren. Vice-Presid- A on Dan would Spotlight not be complete without recognizing his dear wife, Rae. She has been more than a wife; more than a companion to her husband. . .she has been his eyes. She stood by him at the time of his accident and through the dark years that have followed. She has been his chauffeur, his guardian angel, his pillar She has helped of strength. Dan in so many ways, especially since their sons have married and moved away. Dan has a great love of life, he loves people. He is a man In with much all the years, since his accident, he has never c o m p 1 a i never asked Why did it happen to me? It is a marvel to think of the many things Dan has done and accomplished in spite of the great handicap which has been his. If greatness can be measured by qualities such as composure, forbearance, tolerance and perseverance, then Dan Thompson is a great man, certainly one who is loved by his family, friends and neighbors. n-- ed Service News Marine Pvt. It seems thatlast week, the Aurora Senior basketball team, (better known as Those Oldies, But Goodies"! played in the Regional Senior Tournament, in Richfield. They were awarded the Sportsmanship Trophy. Brent Taylor also received a trophy for being one of the high scorers in the tournament and if a trophy for the team with the most injuries" had been awarded, Aurora would definitely have it on their shelf. Mr. and Mrs. Otto Taylor traveled to Salt Lake last week. While there, they visited with Mr. and Mrs. Phil Connell, Mr. and Mrs. LaVar Roberts and Mr. and Mrs. Fenton Dailey. Karen Mason and children and Lottie Morrell, Richfield, traveled to Salt Lake City last week. While there, Mrs. Morrell kept a rn e d i c a 1 appointment. Weekend visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Gerald Mickelsen were Mr. and Mrs. Mike Lorentzen and son, Nephi, and Mr. and Mrs. Steven Mickelsen, Salt Lake City. Mr. and Mrs. David Palmer, who have been living in Richfield, have moved to Aurora, and are living in the Max home. Weekend visitors at the home of Mr. and Mrs. Alma Thompson were LoRene Thompson, Provo, and Chad and Shawna Rawlings, Orem. Friday evening, Perry Jack-so- n, along with the Peterson Band, Loa, entertained at the Aurora Recreation Center. After an enjoyable musical evening, a cake auction was held. All proceeds from these events were donated to the Wards Building Fund. Jeanette Kennedy, Salt Lake City, was a weekend visitor at the home of her parents, Mr. and Mrs. Evan Kennedy.
