DOD to phase out full SSN's on IDs WASHINGTON — A senior official said April 3 that as a means of combating identity theft, the Defense Department will issue identification cards without full Social Security numbers printed on them. The Defense Department cares about protecting personal information as well as increasing database security, said Mary Dixon, director of the Defense Manpower Data Center based in Arlington, Va. TriCare, the military services' health maintenance organization, already has removed Social Security numbers from its members' identification cards, Dixon said. Plans are to remove the Social Security numbers from identification cards issued to military family members by the end of this year, she said, noting that those cards still would display the sponsors' SSK for now. Between 2009 and 2010, all department-issued identification cards will feature only the last four digits of a holder's Social Security number, she said. New identification cards will be issued as they reach their expiration dates, she said. Hill to conduct annual ESOHCAMP Audit T he annual ESOHCAMP audit at Hill AFB will be April 21May 1. ESOHCAMP is an acronym for Environment, Safety and Occupational Health Compliance Assessment and Management Program. Although it's often thought of as an inspection, the goal is really to provide an audit, or as the name says, an assessment, of how the base is complying with environmental, safety and occupational health laws and Air Force requirements. Every year the installation undergoes this kind of audit, and every third year the audit team is comprised of individuals from AFMC. This year, the ESOHCAMP will be an internal audit, meaning the audit team will be made up of individuals from right here at Hill. ESOHCAMP is a terrific tool for gauging the success of these important programs and it also offers a chance to correct deficiencies before they turn into major compliance problems. The audit will cover all of the maintenance, sustainment and fighter wings, as well as all DoD tenants such as the Army Rail Shop. The Utah Test and TVaining Range and the Little Mountain facility are also included. Hill's ESOHCAMP teams will conduct in-depth reviews of all base environmental programs and various Safety and Occupational Health protocols and submit those findings to a consolidated environmental, safety and occupational health data base to help commanders and managers track their units' status and progress in correcting any deficiencies. The ESOHCAMP database is very user-friendly and allows organizations to have almost instant access to information about the findings. Hill's ESOHCAMP will attempt to identify the root cause for each finding. As with former environmental compliance audits, units or work groups with adverse findings will use the root cause analysis to develop and implement management action plans in order to correct any findings. The ESOHCAMP program allows the Air Force to identify potential problems in these critical subject areas and correct them before they become serious safety and health issues or formal violations found by state and federal regulators.
