Show in HILLTOP TIMES TIMES I U April 10, 2007 Tax extension requests go e-file P HOENIX — The Internal Revenue Service today urged taxpayers who need additional time to complete their tax returns to submit their requests for an automatic extension electronically by April 15. E-filing a request for an extension is convenient, safe and secure, and taxpayers receive confirmation to keep with their records. The extension gives taxpayers until Oct. 15 to file the tax return. An extension does not give the taxpayer an extension of time to pay. Those who owe taxes can make a payment when they file the extension either by mailing a check or by several electronic payment methods, such as electronic funds withdrawals from bank accounts and credit card payments. Some taxpayers can wait until after April 15 to file a return, pay any taxes due and make ERA contributions for 2007. As a general rule, those eligible get the extra time without having to ask for it. Eligible taxpayers include members of the military serving in Iraq, Afghanistan or other combat zones. Normally, the postponement is until 180 days after the service member leaves the combat zone. The IRS expects to receive 10.3 million extension requests during 2008 compared with 10 million extensions received during 2007. The IRS expects to receive almost 2 million extension requests via electronic means this year. From Utah, the IRS expects to receive 89,000 extension requests during 2008 compared with 85,200 extensions received during 2007 and expects to receive 15,800 extension requests electronically this year. Taxpayers can get an automatic six-month extension to file their tax returns by filing Form 4868, Automatic Extension of Time to File. It is also important for extension filers to remember that Oct. 15 is not only the due date for their tax returns, it is also the last date on which a return can be filed that will result in an economic stimulus payment. Taxpayers who file earlier, however, will get their economic stimulus payments sooner. Taxpayers can e-file the extension from a home computer or through a tax professional who uses e-file. Taxpayers can e-file their extensions at no cost. Some companies offer free e-filing of extensions through Free File at www.irs.gov/efile/ articIe/0,,id=l 18986.OO.html. Airman 1st Class Jared Hollers, 332nd Expeditionary Maintenance Squadron crew chief, replaces retaining rings on an F-16 Fighting Falcon's main landing gear wheel at Balad Air Base, Iraq, March 29. The rings allow the wheels to roll smoothly and must be changed after every 15 missions during combat operations. Above right, he places an F-16 Fighting Falcon's wheel onto a bead breaker that separates the tire from the rim during maintenance operations at the base in Iraq on April 2. Replacing the outer skin of the wheel helps provide the proper traction during landings. The maintenance squadron is responsible for on- and off-aircraft maintenance as well as launch, recovery and servicing support for military and commercial transient aircraft. Hollers is deployed from Hill Air Force Base. The Electronic Civilian Record Update, or ECRU, gives civilians preparing to meet a development team panel the ability to perform Web updates on certain civilian career information, such as developmental and professional military education, and duty titles. The new capability, built on an existing software application, is an interim solution for helping development teams resolve an ongoing issue of not having employee records updated in time before the panels meet. The self-service updates give career development team members a clearer picture of the work force and the updates help them to more effectively develop future leaders and meet the needs of the Air Force. Air Force officials are working an initiative, in conjunction with officials from the Department of Defense, that will give all Air Force civilians the ability to update their education, training and special qualifications (certifications, professional licenses) through My Biz. My Biz is a self-service module that is part of the Defense Civilian Personnel Data System. Using My Biz, civilians have the capability to update work e-mail addresses, work and home telephone numbers, handicap codes, ethnicity and national origin and language. However, other critical pieces — such as education — are "view only." In the future, My Biz will provide additional update capabilities. "When the long-term solution becomes a reality, it will be a huge leap forward in giving civilians the power to manage their careers more effectively," said Cindy Waechter, chief of the civilian future operations branch at AFPC "Instead of being dependent on others to do those updates, customers will be able to do them at their convenience. This new capability will basically streamline what used to be a fragmented process into one . Web-based, self-service application." Currently, civilian employees have to trek to various locations to update their records because certain tasks are performed at the flight level, installation level or at other organizations. For example, to update education and training, civilian employees must visit their civilian personnel office. Once there, they drop off copies of their transcripts or certificates of documentation and wait for the system to be updated. "Our goal is to give customers the ability to go in and update their important career information themselves, so it can be immediately reflected in their career brief," Waechter said. "By eliminating those unnecessary steps, we can provide faster and smarter service when our customers need it." For more information, visit AFPC's "Ask" Web site and search for "ECRU." University Park Blvd., Layton • 1-15 Exit 334, east on Hwy. 193 • NOW ACCEPTING APPLICATIONS REVIEW From page 9 Tolson forms his latest debate team with the aggressive and mouthy Henry Lowe (Nate Parker), the solid and no-nonsense Hamilton Burgess (Jermaine Williams), the challenging and determined Samantha Booke (Jurnee Smollett) and the young and brilliant James Farmer Jr. (Denzel Whitaker). James Farmer Sr. (Forest Whitaker) was a respected theologian and the administrator of Wiley College. He pushed his son to achieve (even at the young age of 14) and kept a wary eye on Tblson, whom he deemed a little reckless. Still, the two men had great respect for one another and you'll enjoy the few moments these two Oscar winners (Whitaker and Washington) spend on the screen together. However, this story belongs to the young people, namely Denzel Whitaker (surprisingly, no relation), who ignites the screen with a controlled dignity and measured defiance. The story follows this unlikely small-town debate team as it takes on some of the great university debaters of the day. Considering that black colleges had never gone head-to-head against white colleges, it was a historic breakthrough. Oddly enough, it departs from history. In 1935, Wiley College took on the mighty University of Southern California — not Harvard as is shown in the film— but hey, what's a little poetic license among " friends? The point is, the movie is thoughtful, engaging, intelligent, uplifting and here come some other dirty words — informative and enlightening. "The Great Debaters" is a wonderful film for moviegoers everywhere who don't mind a little knowledge slipped in along with their entertainment. |
