A youth recreation center has a great need in Magna. I spoke with Tom Shimizu on Monday and he told how the old Magna Ward house will probably be bought and built into the center. The commissioners are still checking out the building, to see if it would be practical to heat. The price of the building is $100,000 and the county has appropriated $65,000 and an area of land in Kearns to buy the building. Kerry Steadmen is the director of human services and he said that the "project will stay in Magna, even if the old ward house could not be bought. Steadmen said that with all the red tape he does not want to the people of Magna to get discouraged. Commissioner Shimizu said the recreation center would be in service in a year. Have vou visited the Maena Park lately? In 1975 the County was able to lease the park from KCC and the improvements began with the prompa new park began ting of leading citizen like Roy Smith, and Loyd Beck, to replace the old. Randy Taylor of the Salt Lake planning commission on new stated that Salt Lake has five petitions before the Mayor-counc- il annexation of a large northwest quadrant of land coming as far west as 8800 west. The annexation would take in over 10 thousand acres of land. However, no Magna area is included. The northwest quadrant of land is two miles away from the beach shore and five miles away from Saltair. Taylor said Salt Lake City has "no designs on the Magna area. The annexation has been talked of for several years, and the planning commission tells how it was totally uncontested until the proposal of Lake valley city was started. Then the land owners became nervous. Taylor said it would probably be a decade before any development would begin on the land. All of the proposed land is north of 2100 south, and will not go into the Magna area There is no definite date on the Annexation. Free cheese and butter On September 20, Salt Lake County had a Senior Citizen free cheese and butter distribution, to all county citizens 50 years of age and over. Idaho to St. George Utah. This is in spite of unusual weather patterns with more cloud cover and rainfall that have prevailed over the state during the last 12 months, according to Dr. Wayne B. Ringer, extension energy specialist, Utah State University. Dr. Ringer referred to the solar units built bv homeowners in USU by sponsored workshops Extension Service. He said, These units are providing from 50 to 75 percent of the energy needed for consumable hot water. That means a considerable savings to each homeowner. The amount of savings to the family depends on the cost of fuel available for heating water, the location in the state and how well the svstem is balanced to the amount of hot water the family uses and other variables. Dr. Ringer has one of these solar domestic hot water systems in his own home. It is one of 235 built during extension workshops held over the state and installed by the homeowners within a two-yeperiod. The system with four solar collectors Ringer built for his own home has been in use for nearly a year. Though located in River Heights, Cache Valley in Northern Utah, it has performed very well. ar The freeze protection designed into the svstem proved adequate during low air temperatures last winter. Throughout the spring and summer, harvesting the suns energy in the form of hot water was both profitable and exciting. During a seven-daperiod in our gas water heater turned on just twice for a few minutes as the water tank temperature dropped below 125 degrees. Ringer said. He attributed that to rain and cloud cover. Other davs. the solar system generously provided all the hot water used bythefamiiv. y Dr. Ringer is offering free orientation classes on how the solar hot water systems work. Where enough interest is manifest, he follows up offering a builders workshop. There, homeowners are supplied kits of materials at cost and instructed in building their own solar collectors. He says new design innovations have become available since previous workshops. A more efficient black chrome selective coating copper reduce plate can substantially radiation losses from the solar collector absorber plate. Also, larger collectors may be built and solar collecting systems can be used for heating spas and hot tubs. These and other developments are discussed in the orientation class.
