Show Sat/Sun/Mon/Tues, August 18-21, 2018 The Park Record A-11 Senator aims to leave legacy Hatch Center think tank to push civility after 2018 LINDSAY WHITEHURST Associated Press PARK CITY — Orrin Hatch is stepping down, but he’s not planning on fading away. The long-serving Republican senator spoke Monday at an event kicking off a $40 million fundraising campaign to build the Hatch Center library and think tank in Salt Lake City. “I may be leaving the Senate, but I am in no way leaving public life. I am simply taking the fight to another arena,” he said. Hatch said he’s more comfortable retiring knowing he recruited Mitt Romney to run as his replacement. The former presidential candidate, who also spoke at the luxury ski resort Deer Valley on Monday, is the heavy favorite to win the seat in November. “Senator Hatch just has a way of getting along with people, personal relationships,” he said. “People, whether they agree with him at first blush or not, they’ll go along and make a difference.” The Hatch Foundation is aiming to raise about $40 million over the next two and a half years to build the stately Hatch Center in Salt Lake City, which will house a replica of his Senate office, voluminous papers and a think tank partnering with the University of Utah. It will also have a presence in Washington. One primary aim is promoting bipartisanship and civility in politics, an area where Hatch himself has hit highs and lows over his long career. Hatch has reached across the aisle over the decades, famously through his friendship with the late liberal lion Ted Kennedy. He has also thrown verbal punches, including a recent expletive to describe Democrats’ conduct during the battle over President Donald Trump’s second nominee for the U.S. Supreme Court. “He expresses his mind pretty openly. I think people respect him for that, and they would expect nothing less,” Romney said, adding that he agrees the confirmation battle wouldn’t be his choice: “If I were a Democrat, I’d pick a battle I have a chance of winning.” Hatch announced his retirement in January after helping to pass a sweeping tax-code overhaul and persuading President Donald Trump to downsize two national monuments. The Hatch Foundation has retained an ethics-expert attorney to consult on donations after gifts from companies that also lobby the Senate raised questions. Other high-profile senators, like Kennedy and John McCain, have similar institutes. Hatch said he hopes his post-Senate career will educate the next generation of lawmakers. “I am determined my influence will be far greater felt by imparting to them the virtues of comity, cooperation and comprise so key to my own success,” he said. Judge: rape case will go on Suit alleges LDS church covered up abuse by leader LINDSAY WHITEHURST Associated Press SALT LAKE CITY — A woman’s lawsuit claiming she was raped by a Mormon church leader who was allowed to oversee young missionaries despite a history of sexual misconduct will go forward, a judge decided Monday. The decision will allow McKenna Denson’s lawyers to investigate whether there are others who claim to be victims of Joseph L. Bishop, who oversaw hundreds of young people as president of the Missionary Training Center in the 1980s, or others in leadership positions, attorney Craig Vernon said. “The church represented to McKenna and everybody else that he was good guy, he was safe and he was trustworthy, he was not a sexual predator, he was not a sexual addict,” Vernon said. “We believe there is evidence the church in fact knew that was not true.” Denson has said she wants her story to be public. The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints has disputed the allegations. Spokesman Eric Hawkins said in a statement Monday they are “confident in the legal system to evaluate these claims and determine the truth. As the Church has repeatedly stated, there can be no tolerance for abuse.” The church had wanted the case dismissed because the allegations are 34 years old, meaning key witnesses are dead and evidence has disappeared. U.S District Judge Dale Kimball did dismiss three of the four claims, including those that could have forced the faith to change how it handles abuse complaints, Vernon said. Kimball allowed a fraud claim to stand because Denson said she only discovered the cover-up when she confronted Bishop in December 2017. DENNIS HANLON Your Tuhaye and Talisker Club Connection 435.640.5851 dennis.hanlon@sothebysrealty.com Bishop told her that he’d confessed “incidents of sexual predation” to church leaders in the 1970s, before he was named to the role that gave him authority over hundreds of young Mormons preparing to go on church missions, Denson said. Kimball also dismissed the claims against the now-85-yearold Bishop because the statute of limitations has passed. Bishop has denied assaulting her, but he acknowledged he asked her to expose herself when she was 21, according to police documents. Denson said she reported the assault several times over the past three decades, but the church failed to take action. The church has said Bishop wasn’t punished because he denied the allegations and church members could not verify them. The case emerged with the release of a conversation Denson secretly recorded with Bishop in December. He is heard apologizing to Denson after she confronts him, though he didn’t specify what happened.
