ALL TOURNAMENT TEAM: The Top Ten selected from the Region 12 Round Robin Tourney were presented with trophies from KBRE, bySportscasterStanSorenson. They are kneeling: 1 - r. Division II of Region 12 dominated Round Robin play right down to the final playoff play-off Monday, with Escalante capturing the final state berth over Enterprise, 78-65, 78-65, but it was Division I Kanab, who captured the championship trophy from Valley, in an exciting contest con-test between the two Kane County schools, 71-66. Billed as a match up of the best two big men In the tournament, 6'3" Gary Glover, Glov-er, of Kanab, and 6'5" Wayne Jones, of Valley, the defenses defen-ses closed in tight on them in the first half, shifting much of the scoring to other team members. Kelepl Fi-nau Fi-nau and Scott Robertson, of Kanab, picke i ui the slack for the Cowboys with 18 each, and A lan Crofts with 20 and Tony Esplin, 10 aided the Buffalos effort. Valley's attempt to double team Gluver failed when Fi-nau Fi-nau and Robertson split the nets vvith regularity. Glover Glov-er finished the game with 25 points to lead all scorers. scor-ers. Kanab's zone effectively held Jones to eight points in the first half, but a burst of six points in the final minute and a half gave him 22 for the night, to lead the Buffalos. The Cowboys took an early lead, and had 10 point spreads in both halves of the game, but the Buffalos fought back to a 28-28 tie at intermission, and took a one point lead in the fourth quarter, quar-ter, before Kanab socked the Championship away. Panguitch, the tournament favorite after the first weekend, week-end, couldn't find the basket Friday, but their excellent defense kept them In range of the Buffalos, and a fourth quarter charge threw the game into overtime, only to have Valley go on for the ! win. Beaver, Piute, Gunnison and Escalante grabbed the last four state tournament berths. There were few surprises, but most games went right to the wire to be decided, as the tournament tourna-ment was evenly matched. Milford 16 27 38 55 Parowan 12 35 51 65 The Tigers, after taking Escalante to the wire In the first game and trouncing Bryce Valley couldnt keep up with the Rams for more than a quarter. The Rams used a full court press to take a second quarter lead and then hung on for the win. Sophomore Chad Hardy Har-dy with 27, led all scorers and was the only Tiger In double figures. Sophomore Doug Rogerson led the Rams with 24 and Mike Jones contributed con-tributed 14 and Doug Her-manson Her-manson had 10. Other Ram scorere were Bentley 8, Or-ton Or-ton 6, Stevens 2, and Thornton Thorn-ton 1. Blair Coon, who was sick most of the week, didn't get in the game until the second quarter, but turned In 8, Charlie Coates 6, Bolton, Tolman and T. Hardy each had 4 and Belliston 2 to complete the scoring. Beaver 16 29 48 64 Escalante 13 29 38 57 The scrappy Beavers played In spurts, grabbing a lead and then lapsing to let the Moquls catch up. Jess Cox had 20 to lead the scoring, scor-ing, Burt Myers 13, Brian Morgan 7, Donnie Roberts, David Eyre, Neal Marshall Mar-shall each with 6, Craig Blackner 4 and Robbie Eyre 2. Kanab 12 24 43 54 Piute 14 30 38 49 With Kennedy Sylvester and Darrin Jensen burning the nets on the fast break, the Thunderbirds looked as If they had the Cowboys on their hip the first half, but Kanab decided differently, and outscored Piute 19-8 in the third period and coasted coast-ed to the win. Gunnison 16 29 46 62 Enterprise 19 26 36 57 These well matched teams both depended largely on their outside shooting, with the Bulldogs outlasting the Wolves. Valley 18 33 45 59 640T Panguitch 10 24 37 59 63 This matchup between the Top Division n teams may have been different if the Bobcats had hit their foul shots and layups In the first half. But the Buffalos grabbed grab-bed an early lead and Pan-' guirch was forced to play catchup. The Bobcats led only once, by one, In the final seconds of regulation, but Valley recovered to tie it up at 59 all. The game went Into overtime. The Buffalos Buf-falos got the first basket in overtime and hung on by the skin of their teeth. SATURDAY BOXES Escalante 13 32 49 69 North Sevier 17 37 47 62 With the prize a chance to play off for the final tournament tourna-ment berth, the Moquis and Wolves battled for three quarters before Escalante sewed it up. Moquis: Bailey 20, Alvey 19, Lyman 14, Griffin 8, Woolsey 6 and Reeder 2. Wolves: Hallows 17, Taylor 10, Harward 8, Reynolds 8, Roberts 16 and Pettit 3. Parowan 9 30 42 55 Enterprise 12 26 39 64 The lead flip-flopped several sev-eral times before the dust settled and Enterprise had won the right to play off with Escalante for a state tournament berth. But the Thunder -birds made a game of it, though they couldn't get tho lead and Panguitch continued to widen the spread. Each team had finished in first place . in its division, and Valley had downed the Cowboys in season play. But the Cowboys Cow-boys wanted this one. The state tourney started in Provo at the Marriott Center Wednesday and will wind up Saturday night. There is no doubt that Region Re-gion 12 will be well represented rep-resented with seven teams, any one of which is capable of going all the way to the Class 1-A Championship. |
