And as evidence it remains a fact that the whole system of Mormonlsm Is In a fever of discontent dis-content and back talk by Industrious and virtuous men. who are afraid to stand up as American citizens and say what they think for fear of those over them. It should bo brought to light to all the world. And If they be true it should b made known. A standnrd church work, the Doctrine and Covenants, counsels Its adherents to meet their enemies both In public and in private. When I called upon up-on Joseph F. Smith he rejected that counsel. coun-sel. Minting- me from his door without a hearing, telling me I was nn apostate. I admit being an apostate from priestcraft, uut I deny apostasy from truo religion which, is the cause of truth and llburtv. the poor, the widow and the orphan, and the laws of virtue and chaslltv, nnd lov-alty lov-alty to tho Constitution of tho land, Therefore Joseph P. Smith," I do herewith challenge you, as representative represen-tative of the church, to meet mo before the whole church assembled In conference, at the Sunday morning session next Octo-br,,t?. Octo-br,,t?. Prove yur dlvlno leadership, and the fallacy of my charges and statements, both by Scripture, ancient or modern, and by sophistry and reason. Bring all vour wise men. your seers and prophets, vour fads and learning. And I, with o'thcr church members, will meet vou In tho name of Jsraal's God, nnd In the name of Truth and Liberty, as provided bv the Constitution, and I will prove my 'stand both by reason and by the Scriptures. And God and all men who love truth shall judge between us. Reject this challenge and you will disgrace Mormonlsm and dishonor dis-honor your claim of leadership before the whole world. Mr. Smith, If you are a prophet of God, Ills power will be with you. for vou have the promise; "Take no thought what you shall say and what you shall speak, for He will give you mouth and wisdom that your enemies cannot gainsay or resist." Therefore you need have no fears. Prepare Pre-pare for the Issue, I will meet vou there, and either you or I shall hold our peace forever. To the people J will say: Tho church belongs to you, not to your leaders only. Allow me tho privilege of expressing myself: my-self: I will either prove my stand or bring pverlastlng contempt upon myself. Mormonlsm must cither rise or fall. To those who have malice toward Joseph F. Smith: Cease yo to hate him; hla burdens bur-dens are great. And If there are any who would resort to disorder or riot Remember Remem-ber that Uncle Sam is not far off, and might make you feel sorry. Truth cannot bo crushed by violence. I will also ask The Tribune to cease cartooning Joseph F Smith. And last but not least, let the Deseret 'ews take down Its motto. "Truth and Liberty," nnd ccaso to pose as tho church organ, or else open Its columns to all the people of the church and to any one who has a truth to proclaim. For tho honor of the State, for the sake of decency, let the Internal controversy of Utah cease. Remove the cause and the effect will vanish. Awaiting the Issue, In the causo of truth, JOHN H. SCOTT. Salt Lake City, September S, 1905. To Joseph F. Smith and to tho Mormon People: The accompanying article on priestcraft and a chnllenge to defend my stand at the coming conference was written on September S and submitted the next dav for publication, but owing to pressure It received no attention until after Joseph F. Smith had departed for Mexico. 1 desire that It be distinctly understood that neither the writer nor The Tribune had it published In Mr. Smith's absence to gain any advantage over him, but It would have, been published before if possible. pos-sible. Inasmuch as the Deseret News stated that Joseph F. Smith will not return re-turn for two weekfl, 1 ask that the challenge chal-lenge be accepted before his return, as he can himself decide this as well as others which he must decldo before returning to Salt Lake City, and I ask this In order that the people may bo prepared for the occasion. If Mr. Smith remains away during conference con-ference or falls to accept this. I shall bo Justified In assuming that he Ignores, the right of the people of tho church to a hearing. JOHN II. SCOTT. Mr. Scott has written a series of pamphlets, pamph-lets, three at present and others to follow, explaining his views In a logical manner, giving Scriptural evidence for pvcry Ftatemcnt requiring authority. These pamphlets mny be obtained by sending 5 cents for each pamphlet desired, addressed to the author at 102 Green street, Salt Lake City. i |
