Show THE SMOOT INVESTIGATION. It was generally believed that the church's penchant for dabbling in politics would be the subject sub-ject of investigation in the Smoot case, but the personnel of the men recently subpoenad indicates indi-cates that polygamy would be placed under the senatorial searchlight. This is deduced from the fact that many Merrills Mer-rills appear on the list, and as Apostle Merrill is credited with being the proud possessor of the largest polygamous family in the state, his marital mari-tal expansiveness will probably be looked into by the committee. The subpoena of Hyrum Smith would appear to have no other object than an investigate in-vestigate into the family affairs of President Joseph F. J. M. Tanner's presence is also desired, in all probability for an examination into his alleged double ply conjugal relations which came under the falcon eye of the grand jury at its last session. In this connection the summoning summon-ing of ex-Apostle Moses Thatcher is significant, although it may be the committee's desire to hear Mr. Thatcher's version of his involuntary divorce from the church for political incompatibility. In a petition under consideration by the Senate committee, com-mittee, Apostle Teasdale, whose name appears on tho roll of honor, is mentioned as one of the B faithful who has taken unto himself another vife H since the issuance of the manifesto. B. H. Rob- B erts, it is likely, is desired for a facile disserta- B tion on the nomenclature and natal day of the far. B famed twins. H John James, the county clerk, appears on the B list. It is a reasonable deduction that the com. 9 mittee desires that ofllcial to produce the records uZ of the grand jury in relation to the polygamy investigations. Altogether, it looks as if the matter of church interference in politics would be subservient to an investigation of the marital idiocyncraciea of the brethren. |
