Show HURTLING ROD SMASHES CAB Injured Engineer Brings Short Line Locomotive to a Stop C Near Layton Engineer Thomas Lee and Fireman Wal Wai Walter Walter Waiter ter J 7 Catron were injured In a railroad accident near Layton early last evening The accident was caused by b the breaking of a pinion which released the driving rod causing it to tear out the cab of ot the engine Both of Lees legs were bro ken and Catron Caton suffered a fracture of the collarbone The men were employed on the tive Live that pulled passenger train No H ii Hout out of ot Ogden As the train was coming swiftly down the steep grade over half halfa a mile north of ot the Layton depot near nedr which so many man serious s rlou accidents have oc occurred occurred the large pinion on the left side of ot the engine broke letting the driving rod fly fl loose The huge steel bar sweep Ing around with tho the revolution of the wheels tore out the side of the cab broke the steam chest and let the steam out of the boiler In bringing the train to a stop Engi neer fleer Thomas Lee Leo got in the way of the big steel bar that was flying around and bout both of or his legs were broken Fireman Ca Cu tron who attempted to assist him had his collarbone broken When the two en finally succeeded in stopping the train the crew ran ahead and found foun tl tile tUe e engine enveloped in steam escaping from froat the broken chest The engineer was found at his post one of ot his legs broken in three places Though Injured himself the fireman was solicitous about the care of the engineer and assisted in carrying him out of the cab t I Dr E G Gowans of Salt Lake who was a passenger on the train and Drs J E Morton and J E Grant jr of Kays ville vilie attended the injured men An en gine gipe e was sent from Suit Salt Lake to bring brins brin ini In the train The injured men were wore brought b to Salt Lake and they the are now at the Stints Saints hospital where they are being attended by Dr Pinker ton Traffic was vas not delayed by the accident as it occurred within the yard ard limits aV at Layton and the other trains passed on a siding The accident occurred at a point on th tnt Oregon Short Line near which eight pe sons have been killed and several injured in railroad accidents during the past year |
