Show . u THE H.ONESTY OF THE TRIBUNE. Editor Truth: The man who continually proclaims that he is honest is or has been dishonest. dis-honest. The person who exclaims, "I am no horse thief" usually has his eye on your best steed. The darkey who shouts "I am no chicken thief," usually has his neighbor's fattest fat-test chicken for dinner. The woman who loudly brags of her extreme virtue is usually a frequenter of the dive. The preacher who tells how good he is in his Sunday sermon usually us-ually grafts or swindles during the week, and the newspaper that comes out in a long editorial explaining to its readers how truthful it is and says, that it hires truthful reporters is usually us-ually the biggest liar in the state The following is a portion of an editorial edi-torial in the Salt Lake Tribune, July 1, 1907: "It is not possible that The Trib-.unc Trib-.unc could have printed with design, any false report about Mr. Keifcr. The interview was handed in in the usual way, a part of the night's gleanings, glean-ings, and was printed as turned in. Fair, honest, truthful reports are enjoined en-joined upon every one in The Tribune's Trib-une's employ, whether reporters or correspondents; Micro is no such thing as color or bias in reporting facts, news, or conversations. The only possible desire is to have them written and printed precisely as they occur. That is and always has been The Tribune's aim and effort and it is a rule that cannot be departed from." Shades of Ananias and Sapphiral The Tribune dosn't ever pretend to tell the truth. An honest, truthful newspaper does not have to squirm to its readers for falsifying as the Tribune docs in the above. The Tribune Trib-une knew it lied in the Keifcr interview inter-view to cast rcproacli on Utah and Senator Smoot. The Inter Mountain Moun-tain Republican saw it and dclt the Tribune a "solar plexus." The Tribune Trib-une now squirms, whines, and blats like a calf on the branding rack. The Keifcr interview the Tribune cannot obliterate, white-wash, or cover up with a sheet of boiler iron. If the Tribune did not positively know it willfully lied in the following extracts ex-tracts gleaned from the paper, its editors edi-tors and reporters ought to be sent to the idiotic asylunu "That 'here arc more young men and young women wo-men in polygamy today in the Mormon Mor-mon church than ever before in the history of that institution'." "Utah is ruled by law breakers." "Utah is a community of criminals." "Utah schools arc run by lepcrous polyga-mists." polyga-mists." "The Gentiles of Salt Lake City arc denied the right of franchise." "The Mormons boycott and starve out Gentiles." "The Mormons will not sell laud to Gentiles." "The Mormon church teaches treason and its leaders are traitors." "At the April Ap-ril 1905 conference the Mormons officially of-ficially restored polygamy as a practice prac-tice in the community," etc. etc. Falsehoods upon falsehoods in nearly every issue of the Tribune, and now it comes out in a puny, sickly squirming squirm-ing editorial and states: "It is not possible that the Tribune could have printed with design any false report." The milk iniui who said it was not possible for him to sell adulterated milk, had a barrel of powdered chalk by his well pump. Here is an extract ex-tract from the Presbyterian Home Mission Monthly for October, 1903: "Our readers have everything at first hand on Mormonism, every article art-icle has come recently and directly from those who arc in a position to know whereof they affirm, and who arc too fair and conscientious to affirm af-firm that which they do not know to be a fact." Following the above in the Oc tobcr number it says: "Polygamy is rapidly increasing in Utah." The Gentiles in Salt Lake City arc denied the right to vote." "In one town in Utah arc fifty Mormon women, who if they could leavle in a body would make their escape but dare not go out singly." "Not one marriage in ten is absolutely honest in the Mormon Mor-mon church." "Utah has commun-numitiies commun-numitiies where the majority of the people can neither read nor write." "Lying, profanity and moral pollution pollu-tion proclaim the origin of Mormonism," Mormon-ism," etc. etc. The Presbyterian Hpme Mission Monthly icndorscd Frank Cannon and Fred T. Dubois used it as a campaign cam-paign document in the fall of 1905. The statement of a man who advertises ad-vertises that his word is as good as his note should be properly endorsed before being accepted. The Rev. Delos Fink, the authorized authoriz-ed illustrated devil fish lecturer for the Presbyterian Board of Home Missions, statles in the biggest lie he tells that, "These facts have been proven bcyon dispute." The Tribune Trib-une further affirms that its reporter is the man who cut down the cherry tree in the following: "On the other hand, The Tribune Reporter who had the interview with Mr. Keifcr affirms in the most positive pos-itive manner that he quoted him ac curately; and while it was not a matter mat-ter of stenography, he is an experienced, experi-enced, truthful man, who knows well the importance of accuracy and faithfulness. faith-fulness. Wc believe fully that he reported Mr. Kiefer accurately, des-pitc des-pitc MV. Kcifcr's letter of denial." The reporter may have reported Mr. Keifcr correctly, in tho manuscript manu-script he turned in, but if he did, which is very probable, the man who edited the copy changed tire ruth to falsehood. The fakir at the side show declared de-clared that the man who found the mer-maid he was exhibiting was a truthful, honest man. The committee commit-tee who examined the mer-maid dis- 5' covered it was entirely composed of horse-hair, wax, and fish skins. The Tribune's promising to be truthful is like Frank Cannon's swearing off, it don't last till the next issue. Yours truly, V. S. PEET. Salt Lake City, July 3, 1907. o |
