MAT HEADACHE-Uni- on 1, Cats Win 8 Matches Union Cougar matmen nip Lehi Pioneer crew, 42 to 36 By Aldon Rachele The Union High School wrestling team has powerful and state champion, Uintah set for Thursday, January 22 in Roosevelt, but for now the Cougars are celebrating a 42-3- 6 region triumph over Lehi. Union led by as much as 26 points before a strong rally by Lehi put the Pioneers six counters short and in the losers circle, Wednesday evening. Union won the first four matches to take a 22-- 0 lead over the Lehi bunch. Terrell Winterton, Union, 103, appeared to be in trouble when he gave up a near fall, but all of a 21-ti- sudden he turned and owned a 12-- 8 advantage at the end of the second. However, Cook turned on the high heat as he smoked Tyler Neilson for a neutral, 6-- ten-poi- nt victory. Nate Nielson, 189, made the night worth all the sweat as he to pounded Brock Worthan, 10-lock up a team win for the Union Cougars over Lehi. Nielson led 0 after one round and then scored a takedown plus a near falj. for a 2 second round edge. Jesse Cook is wrestling for Western Wyoming. 1 8-- Tom Meacham earns pin triumph for BYU College, 33 to 12, and producing one By Aldon Rachele The Brigham Young University wrestling team opened its home mat season with a recent win over Ricks of the individual victories was former Union High School matman, Tom Meacham, who pinned Ricks Colleges Allen Bolen with 15 seconds left in the third round. Meacham, sophomore, wrestles now for the BYU Cougars, placed second at the 1995 State Tournament while a member of the Union Cougars. Six other Cougars also won matches with the only other pin by BYU freshman, Collin Robertson, who put his opponent, Tom Worton flat on the mat in the third round.
