Show April 2002 Energy 21A Questar system lies at center of interstate pipelines, gas basins Questars strategic position at the hub of western energy development began, ironically, with a problem in 1922. What was Ohio Oil Company - one of Questars predecessors - going to do with the large volumes of gas discovered in southwestern Wyoming? The nearest market large enough to use such quantities northern Utah - was 200 miles -- away. Seven years later, a consortium of Ohio Oil and two other companies constructed the answer - the pipeline of 1929. It was described as a project with no Western parallel because of the new technologies employed and the challenges of constructing a pipeline through the mountains in midwinter. From the first pipeline, Questar, headquartered in Salt Lake City, has developed the regions most comprehensive energy network - ideally positioned to tap into the Rockies energy boom. Questars $3.2 billion in assets include core holdings in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Questar Market Resources ranks among the largest independent oil and gas producers in the Rockies. Almost 70 percent of its 1.185 trillion cubic feet equivalent of gas and oil reserves are in Utah, Wyoming and Colorado. Questar Pipeline constitutes a regional hub, connecting multiple supply basins with interstate pipelines that serve national markets. The pipeline also operates the largest underground storage facility in the West. Questar Gas provides retail service to more than 732,000 customers in Utah and portions of Wyoming and Idaho. With some 400 trillion cubic feet (Tcf) of potential gas reserves, the Rockies rank second only to the Gulf Coast as a source of future supplies. From the early Ohio oil wells in Wyoming, Questar has developed the Rockies resource base. The companys system lies at the center of major interstate pipelines and basins. It consists of an 1,800-milcore pipeline system along with compression and storage facilities in southwestern Wyoming and non-regulat- hub-and-spo- e northern Utah.
