Formed in 1912 from several small electric companies, UP&L became a subsidiary of Electric Bond and Share Company in New York. In 1989, PacifiCorp acquired Utah Power & Light. The utility company continued doing business as Pacific Power and Utah Power. In 1999, PacifiCorp merged with United Kingdom-baseScottishPower. The company is currently one of the Wests largest electric utilities. Coal is a valuable resource used to fuel power generating plants not only in Castle Valley, d but throughout the United States. Approximately 40 percent of the coal used in the PacifiCorp system is produced from captive mines. The companys mines produce approximately 1 1 million tons of coal annually from surface and underground operations. Surface operations produce approximately seven million tons (kwh) bhx'ks of renewable energy per month by arranging to have a fee added to electricity bills. Blue Sky is offered in Utah, Oregon, Washington and Wyo- per year and underground operations produce approximately four million tons per year. The company operates the Deer Creek mine in Castle Valley and holds interest in coal producing facilities in Wyoming as kilowatt-hou- r well as Colorado. Utah Power is an operating division of PacifiCorp, one of the Wests leading energy companies Castle Valley residents may call the company toll-fre- e at serving more than 1.5 million electric customers in the state, Idaho, Wyoming, Oregon, Washington and California Utah Powers Blue Sky renewable energy program continues to grow across Utah and other states served by PacifiCorp. Utahns helped hike Blue Skys ranking of the wind power program from seventh to sixth on the United States Department of Energys top 10 list of customer participation in green pricing programs. Out of nearly 8,000 total Blue Sky participants, more than 3,000 customers are in Utah. Utah Power launched Blue Sky in 2000 to offer customers the opportunity to support the development of wind power. Customers may purchase 100- - ming. the program at bluesky( pacificorp.com or visit the utility company on the web at www.UtahPower.net. We find it gratifying that so many Utahns have chosen a renewable power option, said Amanda Nelson, Utah Powers vice president of customer services. Wind power will continue to have a high profile in the development of renewable power generation, and were encouraged that Blue Sky is enjoying continued popularity. In addition to Blue Sky, PacifiCorp continues to invest in renewable power projects. The corporation owns nearly 33 megawatts of wind energy from the Wyoming project and gets 23 mw from its Blundell geothermal plant in southern Utah. The company also purchases 50 mw of wind power from the Rock River I facility in Wyoming. Steam pours out of the stacks at local coal-fuele- d power plants. We hate it when the powers out.
