and it will be a time long to be remembered byall by all present hat a short time little more than one year since the first elders landed upon these the shores as it were friendless and destitute to all human appearances yet during daring this short time more has been done through the grace of god and the eternal priest priesthood bood by the few elders here than by DR all the missionaries during win H baua and K ff kaleohano were chosen clerks of the conference singing and prayer by elder cannon who addressed redressed the congre congregation gration and stated the object for which this conference had been convened that on this day twenty two years since the church of jesus christ was restored to the earth through the power of f god and that we had assembled to cele orate drate the anniversary of the restoration of said church which at its first organization numbered only six members yet notwithstanding all its per today to day aay numbers its thousands yea tens of thousands therefore we have this day assembled to confer upon things and principles pertaining to the kingdom of god upon earth also to celebrate the band sacrament of the lords supper likewise to fast and pray they had continued tasting they were not hungered but were filled with the holy spirit and they seemed to triumph over all opposition and to believe that the gospel should spead sp ead over the whole of these islands pret pre t cannon spoke upon the spread of the gospel in this island that we iad had indeed been blessed considering the means employed that none of the elders thoroughly understood the language and that they had many privations to encounter yet the work was rapidly and surely progressing and that these were as it were the first fruits of their labors and if these were the first fruits what would the foulness of the harvest be also exhorted the brethren to be firm and to seek after truth and that if they would observe all the words of the lord and be guided by the spirit at much against our will we were forced to bring our conference to aclise a close some of ef the native brethren wished to tarry even until morning yet we thought it would not be wisdom to do so motioned by elder hawkins hawking that this conference be adjourned until the ath day of october 1852 seconded by elder hammond and carried unanimously motioned by bro napela that the first day of each month be set apart for fasting and prayer for the gifts of the church also for the lord to prosper the spread of th gospel upon these islands seconded by bro aad carried the conference was then dismissed with prayer during this conference good order has prevailed the brethren and sisters have been very att attentive e etive they all seem wi willing ming to obey the verl tr truth u h as fast as they learn it they have been very much addicted to smoking yet many among them even some of the most influential men in the church have entirely quit the use of the weed they are beel becoming oming more
