Show August 201 the lAuGhiNg pOiNtr! Getting A's Hello! A woman I know, Terri*, who doesn't have a college degree, but has enough experience to have one (i.e. if her life experience were translated into college credits, which has been done by the way), wants the opportunity to learn and do other things in her job especially conduct training in a classroom. Unfortunately, she is being held back by her boss/leader. A boss micromanages. A leader empowers. A boss/ leader is a combination of a micromanager and one who empowers, if you can believe such a thing. Which one are you? Empowering employees and micromanaging them, thus the boss/leader term, seems like an oxymoron. According to MerriamWebster online dictionary an oxymoron is, "A combination of contradictory or incongruous words (as cruel kindness)." I've had bosses and I remember walking on egg shells under their dictatorship. Truly, it's not a fun environment to work in. Typically, in these types of organizations there is favoritism, special privileges, withholding of important information, entitlement, Barnett's ORTHODONTICS www.bracesbybarnett.com brown-nosing and smooz- Education Leadership that ing, tattling, the "bad guy/ some of the best trainers good guy" mentality, power I've worked with didn't trips, treated like an object have a college degree. One night I woke myself up with a loud "Hello!" to someone in my dream. As the next day came and went, I thought the nocturnal outburst was mine alone to remember. But that night, as my wife and I were getting ready for bed, she said dryly, "If you see anyone you know tonight, just wave." Sharing a Locker Another man and I share a locker at work. Noticing that it needed a new combination lock, my partner said he would pick one up on his way to work the next day. It occurred to me later that I might not see him in the morning. How would I find out the combination? I needn't have worried. When I arrived at work I found that he had used the locker before me and had left a note reading: "To find the first number subtract 142 from your high score the last time we went bowling. The second number is 16 less than that. To find the third number subtract 1.87 from the amount you owe me." A professor stood before his class of senior biology students, about to hand out the final exam. "I want to say that it's been a pleasure teaching you this semester. I know you've all worked extremely hard and many of you are off to medical school after the summer. I don't want anyone to get their GPA messed up because they might have been celebrating a bit too much this week, so anyone who would like to opt out of the final exam now will receive a 'B' for the course." Naturally, there was much rejoicing in the class as students got up, walked to the front of the class and took the professor up on his offer. As the last taker left the room, the professor looked out over the handful of remaining students and asked, "Anyone else? This is your last chance." One final student rose up and opted out of the final. The professor closed the door and took attendance of those students remaining. "I'm glad to see you believe in yourself," he said. "You all get 'A's." Overdue Books While working in the library at a university, I was often shocked by the excuses students would use to get out of paying their fees for overdue books. One evening an older student returned two books that were way overdue and threw a fit over the "outrageous" $2 fee that I asked her to pay. I tried to explain how much she owed for each day, but she insisted she should be exempt. "You don't understand," she blurted out. "I didn't even read them!" It Makes Sense...By Veda Vale A warning circulating on the internet is for us to ignore any telephone voice who claims to be representing an official jury duty officer. You might claim rightly that you have never received a call for jury duty, and the caller will ask for your personal information, like social security number, so he, he says, can keep you from getting into trouble for ignoring a call. None of us want complications for a supposed missed jury summons, so we might rattle off our information. Don't do it. It makes sense to never give out our personal information over the phone and to be darn sure of safety whenever you do it. If we all play our cards close to the chest, the bad guys will give up and look for another game to play. Hot, achy feet? Try soaking them in soda water or Vinegar water. Besides benefit of having some of the toxins soaked out , it is surprising how much dead skin will soften and could be easily removed. If our feet don't hurt, life sure feels happier. Be feet smart!
