Twenty-four horses competed and the competition was well prepared for the event. A horse and rider team had to complete fourteen different obstacles under a stressful time factor and most of the rider had to perform during a huge rain storm. Obstacles included the Coffee Grinder, crossing a Wooden Bridge with a smelly Cow Hide under it, a Rope Gate, Hay Bale and Tire Jumps, Cracking a bottle off a barrel with a Bull Whip and much more! The event was exciting to watch as horses and riders were pushed out of their comfort zones. The event wouldn't have been able to happen without the support of the generous sponsors; Garfield County Travel Council, Todd Campbell Family, Boulder Community Alliance, Sevier County Animal Clinic- Dr Utley. Or the willing help; Bruce Morrell, Ryan Haws and Boulder Creek Ranch, Boulder Mountain Lodge, Brian Dick, Heath Spencer, Jed Woolsey, Ben Ripplinger, Audrey Austin, Aram Barsh, Crocket Dumas, Cassie Lyman, Laura Lisonbee, and many others. Or the experienced judges; Arnold Alvey, Garth Noyes, and Mark Lisonbee. And of course Katie Austin, the reason there is a competition at all. Thank you to all the riders who came and supported the event. VOLUNTEERS MAKE FOR SUCCESSFUL EVENT The Bryce Canyon Half Marathon Committee would like express their sincere thanks to the many volunteers who, once again, made the seventh annual 2010 Bryce Canyon Half Marathon and 5k a stunning success. Bryce Canyon National Park, Forever Resorts, local CERTs, Tropic's own Pizza Place, the Cloud Family of Tropic, Stepping Stone Motel and Bybee Family, Aaron Bybee Plumbing and Family, Vicki Syrett and Anita Fletcher and their families, all manned water stations for the 1300 half marathon runners along the 13.1 mile course starting near Ruby's Inn and finishing at the Cannonville Park. Runners voted on their favorite water station and this year's runner's favorite was Station 7; Aaron Bybee Family. Second place went to Station 5; the Cloud Family. Third place was resoundingly "ALL". Congratulations to the Aaron Bybee Family and all the water stations for your continued efforts and participation. Kodachrome Basin State Park and the Comp Family manned the 5 k water station. The Bryce Valley Girls Volleyball Team and Cheer Squad prepared hundreds of oranges, bananas and bagels for runners finishing in Cannonville. Dozens of individuals, local businesses and organizations such as Panguitch's Young Men and Women, The Grand Staircase Inn, Ruby's Inn and Dixie National Forest provided invaluable people power and resources for the race. The Committee is grateful to local law enforcement , Search and Rescue, State Highway Patrol and the LEPC for their organizational efforts and early morning presence on the course. The Scenic Byway 12 Committee and friends prepared spaghetti for 200 people carbing-up on Friday night before race day. Garfield County employees and the Garfield Travel Council and friends stuffed runner's packets and registered runners making it not only a community effort but a county effort as well. Many thanks to all- The Bryce Canyon Half Marathon Committee |
