Hoffman to lead AFMC By Air Force Materiel Command Public Affairs W RIGHT-PATTERSON AIR FORCE BASE, Ohio — Department of Defense officials announced April 18 that Lt. Gen. Donald J. Hoffman, currently the military deputy in the office of the assistant Air Force secretary for acquisition at the Pentagon, will become the sixth commander of Air Force Materiel Command. President Bush has nominated Hoffman for promotion to the grade of general with assignment as commander of AFMC, headquartered at Wright-Patterson AFB. Hoffman will succeed Gen. Bruce Carlson, the current AFMC commander who has served in the position since August 2005. No dates have been announced for when the change in command will occur. One of nine Air Force major OO-ALC executive director to retire commands, AfMC's mission is to conduct research, development, test and evaluation, and provide acquisition management services and logistics support necessary to keep Air Force weapon systems ready for war. In his current position, Hoffman is responsible for research and development, test, and production and modernization of Air Force programs worth more than $23 billion annually. Lt. Gen. Donald J. My first distinct memory is the mountains. Being an Ohio kid, we don't have a lot of mountains." With a start in the Service as an inventory management specialist, he moved to managing acquisition, sustainment and depot maintenance operations and then later on to director positions. When Cazel changed stations to Langley AFB, Va., he knew that the executive directorship of the OOALC was the job he wanted. "It's kind of a funny story," Cazel began. "I left here to go to Langley in 2003, and for the first time in my career I had my sights set on one particular job. A few months after I arrived, the job opened up at Hill, and I doubted I would have a chance to SENIOR AIRMAN CLAYTON MURRAY/US.
