Currently, there are 120,000 Americans on the waiting list. This is all needless. While only 40% of Americans are registered as donors, 90% support donation, leaving 150 million Americans who support donation but aren’t registered. ORGANIZE is building a portfolio of technologies that makes it easier for Americans to register and more seamless for states to speak to each other when confirming an organ donor status. “I spent five years at my father’s bedside while he waited for a heart transplant, and I kept thinking ‘there has to be a better system!’ After years of research, I learned there was, so I geared up to fix it,” says Greg Segal, co-founder of ORGANIZE. One of the biggest problems with organ donation is a lack of communication between participating states. Currently there are 52 different statebased registries that aren’t interoperable. To solve this issue, ORGANIZE is developing a Querying System with Inetz, a Salt Lake City IT firm, and SightLife, a Seattle-based eye bank and Global Health Organization, that allows organ, eye, and tissue organizations to simultaneously search existing state donor registries to confirm organ donor designations. Currently, individual state donor registries are not interoperable and must be queried separately. The ORGANIZE Querying System provides a single-point search platform that is a natural next step in technology that offers the ability to simultaneously search the registries of California, Idaho, Montana, Utah, and Washington to assure that organ donation decisions that individuals have made are honored. “By more efficiently determining authorization, we can process more referrals, enabling urgently needed organs, eyes, and tissues to be provided quickly,” says Eric Schoenecker, SightLife’s Director of Referral Services. “We’re thrilled to be part of the next generation of technology that is going to transform lives.” Additionally, ORGANIZE is launching the first mobile web app at Summit’s Powder Mountain in Eden, Utah. ORGANIZE’s co-founders Jenna Arnold and Greg Segal state that the mobile web through their smart phones, making it more simple than ever to share their preference with the state of Utah and with their loved ones. Together with Intermountain Donor Services (IDS), the Organ Procurement Organization (OPO) in Salt Lake City, ORGANIZE is challenging Ogden Valley to be one of the most highly registered areas in the country. ORGANIZE chose to launch its pilot programs in Utah because IDS is one of the most innovative OPOs in America. Summit Series enthusiastically joined the effort, offering its platform at Powder Mountain to encourage residents, Powder Mountain Skiers, and Summit Series guests to register. “One of Summit’s goals is to catalyze and facilitate opportunity for organizations and initiatives like ORGANIZE. We hope this program will help not only residents of Weber County and Utah, but Americans across the country,” says Summit Partner Audrey Buchanan. “We’re thrilled that ORGANIZE has chosen to build its products and launch in Utah. It’s a testament to the top-notch companies the county supports in the technology and healthcare sectors” says Mayor of Salt Lake City, Ben McAdams. ORGANIZE - ORGANIZE is a start-up focused on modernizing the organ donation system. ORGANIZE is streamlining the registration process by integrating with online pro-social communities and existing state registries, providing easier ways for people to register other at the DMV. In addition to tech solutions, ORGANIZE builds high impact social-movement campaigns to create national awareness around the issue. Intermountain Donor Services (IDS) Intermountain Donor Services (IDS) is a federally designated, nonprofit community service organization dedicated to the recovery and transplantation of organs and tissues. IDS serves Utah, southeastern Idaho, and western Wyoming, encompassing 2.7 million residents, 79 hospitals, and three transplant centers.
