Show Times 0 Hilltop 27. 2C02 jun Report shows base drinking water meets standards report fbrHUlAFB. Bioen-vironment- al "Hill AFB, Utah, provides clean drinking water for its personnel," Hill's 2001 Consumer Confi- dence Report reads. "Our commitment to excellence is reflected in this report that shows our water meets or exceeds both state and federal drinking water standards for water quality." There were no violations of these standards during the 2001 calendar year. Hill AFB serves a population of approximately 22,000 and receives its drinking water primarily from deep wells located on the base. Wells 2, 3, 6, 8 and 9 were used in 2001 for drinking water. at risk from infections. These people should seek advice about drinking water from their solves naturallv occurrinc minerals and can pick aniup substances resulting from the presence of mals or from human activity. In order to ensure that tap water is safe to drink, EPA prescribes regulations that limit the amount of certain contaminants in water provided by public water systems. Food and Drug Administration regulations establish limits for bottled water that must provide similar protection for public health. The drinking water might contain small amounts of some contaminants, though the mere presence of contaminants doesn't necessarily indicate that the water poses a health risk. Some people may be more vulnerable than the general population when it comes to cond taminants in drinking water. persons such as persons with cancer undergoing chemotherapy, persons who have When demand increases during the summer, water is purchased from the Weber Basin Water Conservancy District Weber Basin gets its water from deep wells and the Weber River. Copies of Hill's Consumer Confidence Report and Weber Basin's Water Quality Report are available at the Base library, Bldg. 440; and at Engineering, Bldg. 249. A copy of the report is also sent to the Child Development Center. Bioenvironmental Engineering conducts sampling for microbial contaminants, also known as coliforms; inorganics (metals and salts) ; volatile organic chemicals (pesticides, herbicides and solvents); synthetic organic chemicals (industrial solvents, paints and dyes); physical contaminants (turbidity) ; and radioactive contaminants. Drinking water sources tap and bottled include rivers, lakes, streams, ponds, reservoirs, springs and wells. As water travels over the surface of the land or through the ground, it dis The Consumer Confidence Report, required by the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency from every community water system, is a "report card" that discusses the quality of water provided by the system. The 75 Aerospace Medicine Squadron's Bioenviron mental Engineering Services writes the health care providers. EPA and Centers for Disease Control guidelines on appropriate means to lessen the risk of infection by microbial contaminants are available from the Safe Drinking Water Hotline, Information about other contaminants and potential health effects can be obtained by calling the same hotline. EPA's Web site at www.epa.govsafewater can also be Used for information on drinking water quality. Attached to the copies of Hill AFB's and Weber Basin's Consumer Confidence Report is a public notification required by the State of Utah concerning the qualify of the source of our drinking water, and public education information about and back flows. There's no problem with washing a car but how and where if s done really matters. Gutter Non-toxi- TalEr We can keep both vehicles and waters clean, though. The best thing to do is to use designated wash racks, bermed wash areas Most soaps contain phosphates and other chemicals that can harm fish and other aquatic life. The soap, together with the dirt aruj oil washed from the car, flows into nearby storm drains which rua directly into lakes, rivers or marine waters. The phosphates from the soap can cause excess algae growth algae that looks and harms water bad smells quality. For example, use soap sparingly and pour the bucket of soapy water down the sink or on the lawn when finished rather than out into the street. Consider buying phosphate-fre- e detergents, or use mild, biodegradable dishwashing liquid. c cleaning products can be made from simple household products use a baking soda paste for cleaning battery heads, cable clamps and chrome; baking soda mixed with dishwashing soap for wheels and tires; and white vinegar or lemon juice mixed with water for windows. Parking the vehicle on a grassy area for washing absorbs unwanted runoff and allows water to filter naturally. A hose nozzle with a trigger also helps cut down on the amount of water used.
