Page 4 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 6, 2011 Despains win Top Dog' Flu Season To prepare yourself and your family for this flu season, Central Utah Public Health Department (CUPHD) recommends a yearly flu vaccine for everyone as the first and most important step in protecting against influenza. While there are many different flu viruses, the flu vaccine is designed to protect against the three main flu strains that research indicates will cause the most illness during the flu season. The 2010-2011 flu vaccine will protect against three different flu viruses: an H3N2 virus, an influenza B virus and the H1N1 virus that caused so much illness last season. Getting the flu vaccine now is a good idea, and the protection you get from vaccination will last throughout the flu season. Several formulations are available, including the nasal spray and shot. In addition, you can take everyday preventive steps like staying away from sick people and washing your hands to reduce the spread of germs. If you are sick with flu, stay home from work or school to prevent spreading influenza to others. CUPHD has already received shipment of flu vaccine, and has vaccinations available in each office throughout the six county areas. American Stock dogs from around the country gathered to attend a show held October 1st and 2nd in Salina at the Blackhawk Arena. International Canine Kennel Club also held eight conformation shows in conjunction with the ASDR show that included all breeds. It was very well attended with competitors from several states. Washington, Oregon, North and South Dakota, Texas, Missouri, Mississippi, California and Arizona were represented. Over 60 dogs competed and earned conformation championships. Also for the American Stock Registry, there were other competitions. Novice Agility, Rally 0, and Herding Instinct involved a majority of the dogs attending. A local dog sold to Maddeline Rose of Genola by Bar D Kennel, Kerry and Nannette Despain of Axtell, won the Top Dog award.
