Show Sports Page 10 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 6, 2011 Spartans trounce Bulldogs By BRENT BOSWELL Last Friday's GV Football action in Emery began much like the past several games. The opening kickoff found our boys in blue poised and ready to rumble, and within minutes we'd scored the first TD of the night. Then along came the Spartans and their offensive scoring machine. At the half, the Bulldogs were down 216 and at night's end the final score was 35-13. It was Quarterback Rylan Anderson's first full game after his shoulder injury and he finished the night completing 10 of 30 passes for 204 yards. The Bulldog's offensive line did a great job keeping Anderson protected against and overly aggressive Spartan defense. Colton Caldwell caught 4 passes for 90 yards. Colby Caldwell snagged 2 passes for 23 yards and rushed 5 times for 25 yards, he also caused 2 Spartan fumbles. Braden Harris went 3 for 74 yards receiving, scoring a TD, and he made 13 carries for 131 yards and another GV touchdown. Defensively Braden Harris logged 9 tackles, and Chase Christensen, Chad Boore, and Landry Thompson all turned in 7 tackles each. Like an old Willie Nelson song, this Friday (7:00pm) our Bulldogs are "on the road again", this time traveling to North Summit. The JV (4:00pm) and the Freshman (7:00pm) play Thursday at home. Remember that the football team is sponsoring a huge raffle with the winners to be announced Friday the 14th during our last regular season home game. Some of the top prizes include a large propane porch heater—donated by the Gunnison Market, a threeburner Camp Chef with lots of accessories—donated by Gunnison Valley Implement, and Circle V Meats in Spanish Fork has offered to donate two halfpigs to the team raffle as well. Tickets are $5 per or only $25 for a batch of 7 and can be purchased from any member of the team or coaching staff, at the Gunnison Market on Saturday the 8th, and at the games. So far, there have not been many entries so your chances of winning are very high and it's a great way to show your support for the team. Two more big wins for the Bulldogs by MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison High School girls soccer team scored a bunch of goals last week and only gave up three, leading to two big region wins over Richfield and South Sevier. Sara Nilsson and Paula Ferracini each scored four of those goals, while senior Kayla Peterson and sophomore Braylie Peterson scored one apiece. It started with a 5-1 win over the Richfield Lady Wildcats at Bulldog field last Tuesday, September 27th. Nilsson scored three goals on the Wildcats, while Ferracini and Braylie Peterson each scored one. Braylie's goal was her first ever at the varsity level. Two days later, the Lady Bulldogs headed to Monroe to tangle with South Sevier and left town with a 5-2 win. Ferracini scored three goals, while Nilsson and Kayla Peterson added one each. It was also Kayla's first ever varsity goal. Against Richfield, the Bulldogs led 2-0 at halftime on goals from Nilsson and Ferracini. Nilsson added two more in the second half, then assisted on Braylie's goal late in the match. Nilsson worked the ball down the left side, then sent a cross to Braylie, who took one touch and booted a hard rightfooted shot into the net. That made it 5-1 for Gunnison and that's how it ended. Two days later, the Lady Bulldogs travelled south for a match against South Sevier. The Rams stunned the Bulldogs on this field last year, and were looking for a repeat. This one featured three goals from penalty kicks, and four from corner kick situations. South Sevier took an early 1-0 lead on a their first penalty kick goal of the day, then Ferracini tied the match at 1-1 on a penalty kick late in the first half. The Bulldogs started quickly in the second half. Nilsson headed a shot just over the Rams crossbar in the 42nd minute, then scored a header just a couple of minutes later, giving the Bulldogs a 2-1 lead. The Rams scored on another penalty kick a few minutes later to tie the match at 2-2. Then in the 66th minute, another Gunnison corner kick led to another goal. After a scramble in front of the net, Bulldog senior defender Kayla Peterson pounced on the rebound and booted it in for her first ever varsity goal. "I went up for a header and the goalie went for it too," Kayla said. After colliding with the goalie, Kayla saw the ball near the goal line. "I turn around and the ball's just sitting there. I kicked it and got the goal. It was amazing. Really exciting," Kayla said. Ferracini completed her hat trick with two late goals scored about a minute apart, both on quick shots in front of South Sevier's net. That gave the Bulldogs a 5-2 lead and that's how this one would end. Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen was happy to get the win over the Rams. "There were some things we started doing a lot better today," Jensen said. "We had more crosses and some good squares that I was really pleased with. We started putting that ball in the middle when it was open. I thought everyone played well." Kayla Peterson agrees with Jensen's assessment. "Our shooting was a little off, but our passing was amazing," Kayla said. Kayla and her back line mates stymied the Wildcats and Rams. "We talk, even off the field," Kayla said. "We trust each other, and that carries onto the field." The Bulldogs are proving to be a deep team this year. Last week, 14 different players started. Goalkeeper BrieAnn Peterson started and went the distance in both games. Against Richfield, the starting lineup featured Nikayla Allred, Chansey Caldwell, and Paula Ferracini up front, with Brianna Starks and Sara Brown in the midfield; Kaitlyn by CONNOR HENLINE 440 !;r1; ■ 4N44 • •••1;;;.-- • 4,; •.74 4kr+.44060" . -../ii‘rt't ','1%,:•4‘,71. ttc eterso Hyatt and Yisel Perez on the wings; and Kayla Peterson, Millie Hammond, and Sarah Miller on the back line. The Bulldogs changed things up a bit against South Sevier, inserting Kaitlyn Bown and Braylie Peterson on the front line to start the game, with Cristina Mayorga on the right wing. Other players seeing varsity action last week include Sara Nilsson, Meghan Mietchen and Karla Chavez. Nilsson scored four goals, while Mietchen and Chavez seem to play better each time they step on the field. The Bulldogs host North Sevier on Tuesday, October 4th, and Grand on Thursday, October 6th to complete the 2A East Region schedule, then they'll finish the regular season the next day with a non-region match at Beaver. Grand will play South Sevier on Tuesday this week before coming to Gunnison for the region finale. If the Devils lose to South Sevier, the Bulldogs could tie for second place in region if they beat North Sevier on Tuesday and Grand on Thursday. Manti would have to lose their final two games for the Bulldogs to catch them. If Gunnison finishes in third place, they'll have to hit the road for the first round of the playoffs. If they place first or second- which is a long shot, but not impossible- they'd get to host a first round game. Check with the Gazette early next Wednesday for more details. In the meantime, come on out and watch the Lady Bulldogs in their final home game of the year this Thursday, October 6th, at 4 p.m. The players appreciate your support. The Bulldog golf team recently attended the 2011 2A State Golf Championship at the Palisade Golf Course. Monday, October 3rd marked the first day of the two day tournament. The golfers had the privilege of golfing with kids from the other regions around the state. After a few hours of golfing in perfect weather the Gunnison golf team came in with their season low, a 366. Mason Powell had the team low with an 88. Spencer Agren and Travis Carlisle shot their season low with a 90. Connor Henline, Carlin Johnson and Nathan Lyons also attended the tournament. On Tuesday October 4th the Gunnison golf team attended the second day of the 410 i 2A State Championship. They were expecting rain but got lucky and did not have to battle bad weather for the second straight day. At the end of the two day tournament the Bulldogs came in with a 377, totaling their two day score at 743. With that score the Bulldogs would go home 7th out of 14. Mason Powell recorded his season best of 76, totaling his score at 164. Mason took 10th place at state. Beaver took home the state championship with a two day score of 626. Congratulations to the Bulldog golf team on a good season. They took 2nd in Region and 7th in State.
