KCLGiSam "YOUR POT OF GOLD STATION FOR CEDAR CITY ' ' Lack of college funds to subsidize new equipment, field trips and faculty travel will continue to hamper the progress of programs in SUSCs School of Science, said Dean Harl Judd. Judd said limited funds have been a point of major concern during the colleges effort to gain accreditation. Budgets are insufficient for the growth weve experienced in the past five years, Judd said. I know thats difficult to say, but I'd like to see the equipment budget four to five times more than I ' currently have to work with on a yearly basis. Even then, I am not sure that would be sufficient for what our needs are at this time. Judd said potential student field trips and required faculty travel are curtailed by lack of an adequate travel budget. In many cases, the faculty is forced to pay out of their own pockets for required trips up north to meetings with the Board of Regents, Judd said. The faculty in the School of Science, however, is Judd said. That has to be our major strength, he said. The teachers are dedicated and loyal. They like the school (of science) and the college as a whole. Many of the good programs weve developed here have come as a result of the facultys willingness to go the extra mile. SUSCs Internal prepared in the midst of the accreditation effort, says some members of the biology faculty are not currently first-rat- Self-Stud- pursuing terminal degrees in graduate study. I dont see that as a serious weakness, Judd said. Its true that graduate study strengthens the school and its programs, but it is also meant to allow teachers to advance quicker. It is meant more for a program of the individual teacher. A generous $ 10,000 scholarship fund and increased growth in the physical science department are two more strengths pointed out by the We have a particulary good donor program in the physical sciences area, Judd said. We have some good graduates who were very pleased with our programs here and have gone on to be successful elsewhere. They donate money to the program each year to give other students the opportunity they had. Due to the recent computer boom, Judd said the physical science department has experienced tremendous growth in the past five years. Computers have probably been the single greatest influence on growth, and the fact that we have a good program dealing with geology, he said. Apart from more funds, Judd said the School of Science is in need of separate laboratories for the study of cellular and molecular structure. This is an item of high priority to us, Judd said. We need this facility for many reasons, but mainly to be able to offer the type of research opportunities a college of our academic excellence should offer. In accordance with recommendations made by the Judd said all departments should receive salary and budget increases, and should be expanded to include more faculty members. self-stud- self-stud- New growth frustrates students Increased enrollment coupled without an increase in funding from the state has resulted in student frustration, said SUSC President Gerald R. Sherratt. We are strongly considering an enrollment lid if additional resources arent forthcoming, he said. The college posted its highest enrollment figure in history this quarter 2,543 students. SUSC Registrar Barbara Young said the fall quarter enrollment will actually top 2,600 students. The difference, she said, between the official headcount and the higher figure is accounted for by the number of persons enrolling in courses. Sherratt said student frustration has resulted from the number of times they were turned away from fall quarter classes because the classes were full. This happened 744 times in arts and letters, 682 times ip business, 616 times in education and 701 times in science courses 300 times in computer science alone. non-cred- it Come See Our Jelly Bellies ?
