Show Why the Democrats are Strong j Democrats are in a strong position because business conditions are good, since early 1961 unemployment is down, the gross national product is 8.3 per cent; total personal income is up 6.(3 per cent, and retail sales of automobiles are up 18 per cent. Democrats are in a strong position because the threat of inflation is subsiding, because the cost of living went up less last year than any year since 1956. Democrats here are in a strong position because the public lias confidence in President Kennedy s firm but reasonable approach to our international problems; we have weathered the worst of the 'Berlin crisis; we have strengthened the ties with our free world allies in Latin America and Europe. Democrats, here and elsewhere are in a strong position posi-tion because the Kennedy legislative program has powerful power-ful public appeal. The federal aid to education bill, the medical acre for the aged bill, are bottled up in Congressional Congres-sional committees. This is not $ue to lack of public support. sup-port. The Republicans are suffering from schizophrenia. Their national leadership is in a state of disarray. They are woried about their image. They don't know whether to stick with the tired platitudes of Ev and Charlie, or to go backwards with Goldwater, or to take a gamble on an untried, unknown quantity in the person of Romney. They are baffled by the fact that some of the most successful Republican office seekers are those who do the best job of "me too-ing" the Democrats on issues and keeping quiet about their party affiliation. |
