The final contest was played against the Royal Mexican Band, and Helds band came back to Salt CITIZEN day state outing on August 20 and 27, 1890. There were only two organized bands in the state at that time, Provo and Helds band. Both drilled tor months for the occasion, and the contest was a real feature of the event. JOHN PHILLIP SOUSA, conductor of his own famed band, was an impromptu concert guest of the Utah organization. That was back in 1890, and was two years before -- a bit of history which shows that my own band is six years older than Sousas organization. Helds band has played soldiers away for two years, Utahs regi- ments to the Phillipines in 1898 and the 145th Field Artillery in the World War entraining to his music. Prior to the World War, various organizations of the town in their convention tours enlisted the aid of Helds band, and from coast to coast nt Salt Lake was heralded by the performance of that outfit. ex-cele- band didnt just ride to the city and back either. Wherever the train stopped, the boys hopped out, paraded a bit, hopped on again, and went on their way. In one day, so the record reads, the band made 12 .concerts! Almost a days work at that. With the war came jazz. And now its all jazz. But there are still thousands who love good band music not loud, blatent band music but the real harmony of wind instru- ments well played. So its a satisfaction. And until the people stop wanting, to hear us play, Helds band is going to keep on with this thing!
