Weber surprised everyone, not having won the title since 2003. Weber State paired off against the Northern Arizona Lumberjacks for the number one title, winning the game 88 to 80. The Wildcats started off hot, shooting better than 84 percent within the first ten minutes of the championship game. At the half, they had a 53-37 lead. Rahe led the Weber State Wildcats to the Big Sky Conference with a 20-win season—doubling the number of winning games during their last. Weber is one of only two teams in league history to ever capture the winning title following a last-place finish during the prior season. After being hired as coach, Rahe added 12 new players, including eight junior college transfers. For his successful leadership, Rahe was named Big Sky Coach of the Year, while senior forward David Patten was named the league’s Most Valuable Player. Patten scored a team-high of 22 points during the winning game, and was the only returning starter from last year’s lineup. The win propelled the Wildcats into the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament. On March 16, Weber lost the competition matched to second-seeded UCLA with a 70-24 defeat in the ARCO Arena in Sacramento, California. Their launch into the NCAA round was only the 14th time in the Ogden University’s history to do so. Third Annual Soap Box Derby a Big Success!
