Under the terms of the agreement the United States receives 99-year leases for air and naval bases In Newfoundland, in the islands of Bermuda, the Bahamas, Jamaica, St. Lucia, Trinidad, Antigua, and in British Guiana. Mr. Roosevelt called the deal "the most important action in the reinforcement of our national defense that has been taken since the Louisiana Purchase in Thomas Jefferson's administration. |
