Show POLITICAL GOSSIP ITho prospect that the Smoot case will come to an Issue and bo settled by the United States sonata probably within a month or six weeks is very pleasing to the people of Utah generally gen-erally and to the Republican party of the state in particular. The ceaseless harrassing which Senator Smoot has been subjected to for the last few years, ever since his election has been a serious handicap to his efficiency effi-ciency in tho senate. It has also had a dlliterious effect on tho Republican party locally. There Is neither sense or justice in tho nttompt to oust Mr. Smoot and now at tho end of over three years tho attempt Is going to meet tho defeat it deserves. Those who have led tho fight against tho senator practically admit that they aro beaten. Their press organs tacitly tacit-ly admit it and have taken to threatening threat-ening and bulldozing tho senate, President Pres-ident Roosevelt and the Republican party in tho vain hope of changing what they admit Is now a foregone conclusion that Mr. Smoot will keep his scat. Tho Tribune of course leads or joins with tho rest In attacking attack-ing tho President, giving utterance to tho falsehood that Mr. Roosevelt and tho national Republican party have entered into a bargain with tho Mormon Mor-mon church, whereby In consideration I of Mr. Smoot being retained tho church will use its influence to keep If Utah and Idaho Republican states. Tho story Is absurd and grossly insulting insult-ing to Mr. Roosevelt and the members mem-bers of tho senate. Tho threat mado by some religious weeklies and othei i papers to visit vongeanco on the Republican Re-publican party unless tho senate ox-pels ox-pels Mr. Smoot is so silly that it is not worthy of a moment's considora- tion. Theso papers evidently don't caro anything about tho law, the constitution con-stitution of tho United States or tho rights of individuals. They appear to bo governed solely Dy fanaticism. As j for tho Tribune it' is suffering from j something like rabies. It Is becoming wilder and wilder in its statements and if possible, more abusive and coarse. Tho knowledge that Its case is hopeless has driven it to desperation. despera-tion. Tho sooner tho agony is ovor the better. In Ogden tho morry war gainst graft and grafters goes on and up to tnis time tho grafters seem to bo got-( got-( ting tho worst of it. District Attorney ,Halvorscii, Mr. Skccn anil others who jaro making tho fight for purity in tho ( administration of public affairs, should and will be supported by tho public. , & ct By tho wav Halvorsen is a man of ( courage. Mr. Glasmann has no terrors ter-rors for him. They have needed such 'a man in Ogdcn for a long time. & I Chief Justice Bartch has not yet resigned, re-signed, but tho blow may strike the community at any time, although it is net generally looked for until 'about December 31 -next. Judge Morso and Judgo Frick aro talked of as possiblo candidates for the Republican Repub-lican nomination to succeed Justice Bartch. 1 J & i The State Journal, published at Ogden, has been sold. Wlllard Snyder Sny-der Is credited with being tho now owner and it is said that tho paper will develop Into a straight "American" "Amer-ican" party organ, establishing tho "American" party in Ogden. Wlllard has plenty of money and is dead game. Wo have, however, grave doubts as to tho correctness of tho rumor In so far as It relates to Mr. Snyder. S E. T.- Hulanlski of Ogden, who in times past occupied the exalted position posi-tion of justice of tho peace, is now an active candidate for tho Republican Republi-can nomination for justice of the Supreme Su-preme court. Having administered in a masterly manner tho offlco of J. P. his friends think ho has demonstrated demon-strated that ho is fully qualified to succeed Justice Bartch. Ethics of tho le-al profession rest lightly on Mr. Hulaniski, especially tho part which forbids members of tho bar from seeking to attain tho ermine by tho ways of tho ward politician. Mr. Hul-anski Hul-anski is credited with sending out circulars cir-culars announcing his candidacy and with trying to make himself solid with the politicians. Tho experts now flguro that the sewer oxtenslon which tho late administration ad-ministration told us would be done for $150,000 will cost $300,000. |
