Show Tax forms coming in mail Thanks for publicizing alcohol problem Dear Ann Landers: Thank you . - for encouraging readers to recognize that alcohol consumption by college students is a serious threat to the nation's health and safety. These are the young people who will be running our country in a few years, and we can't afford to lose them. Your reply to "A Former Party Animal" cited some alarming facts about college drinking. You pointed out that the total amount college students in the UJS. spends on booze is $5.5 billion a year. What does that huge amount of money buy? Well, here are some startling figures: One study found that alcohol consumption is one of the major reasons for absenteeism among college students. That same study showed that 25 percent of student deaths are associated with alcohol. Also, alcohol is involved in 90 per-ceof campus rapes. According to nt the 1991 College Alcohol Survey, 70 percent of administrators said that alcohol is a major contributor to campus violence and is a factor in 40 percent of academic prob- post-holida- mational campaign designed to help administrators, faculty and students Amidst the cards, bills and holiday advertisements, Utah's income tax booklets are wending their way through the mail to Utah taxpayers. However, not all Utahns who received booklets last year will find them in their mailboxes this year. Utahns who checked a box on their tax forms saying they used paid tax preparers last year to complete their returns will instead receive postcards informing them that their tax practitioners will have the necessary instructions and forms. This is expected to save the state between $50,000 and $75,000 in printing and mailing costs. The booklets cost 17 cents each to produce, while the postcards cost 3 cents each. Anyone who receives a postcard but does not plan to use a tax practitioner may obtain a tax booklet from the Tax Commission or at the local IRS offices, post offices or libraries. create safer, healthier and more challenging environments at our institutions of higher learning and in their communities.
