Show Ovinions How Do You Feel About Your Class Sizes This Year? Sophomore, Psychology Becky Lovell to It was easier get involved in class discussions last year because I think the classes were smaller. I have noticed a lot more people in both the classrooms and the parking lots , ad David Litvack - Junior, Sociology Psychology Ive heard a lot of complatfits about the size of liberal education classes, but in my upper division classes I havent had any problems. There is usually only six or seven people in the upper division sections, which really makes a difference in class participation. Tillie Wailes Psychology Senior, Education and I think there should be more sections for classes that are more popular. Psychology is a really popular course and the classrooms are always full. Adding more sections could solve the overcrowding and make the learning experience more enjoyable for the teacher and the students. by Blessing Ream and Temmie Fleming Follow-u- p : The Public Service Insitute Scam Continues If you read last weeks Forum you may be anxious to know how you can work for the Public Service Institute, become an As- sistant Governor and make $15 per hour, You cant; the Public Service Institute has been shut down. On of Consumer in the Utah Department of Com- - Sept 10, the Division merce issued a Cease and Desist order against the Public Service Institute and Shirl Zitting. The Public Service Institute and Zitting, founder of the Public Service Insti- tute and write-i- n candidate for governor, were in violation of the Telephone Fraud Protection Act. Zitting made a very simple mistake. He failed to register as a telephone solicitor with the Division of Consumer Protection as required by law. . The story actually broke on August 27. KTVX Channel 4 had a story about the Public Service Institute and Shirl Zitting on its 5:30 p.m. newscast The story reported that Zitting was hiring telemarketers to work as Campaign Managers. He was paying them $25 per hour and $5 for every person they called who signed up to be a Campaign Manager. They had to pay $30 for the privilege. He asked them to vote for him as governor of Utah in the upcoming election. Zitting interviewed applicants at the West Jordan Public Library, The television story included the sight of a vacant lot at 2000 W. 2800 S. as tings home address. , The Public Service Institute is listed in the business section of the phone book at 9176 S. 300 W. No one answers the tele- phone number listed. S.K. Zitting and P.S.I. are listed in the personal section of the phone book at 2000 W. 7800 S. The address on his business registration, easily obtained in the Utah Department of Commerce office, is 2000 W. 2800 S. I dont know why Chan- nel 4 couldnt find Zitting to interview him in their news story. (If this confuses you, Zit-Protecti- on dont be alarmed, you are supposed to be confused. Then youll sign up as a tele- - marketer.) One week later when Zitting talked to me his operation had changed. He moved the operation from the West Jordan Library to 9176 S. 300 W. The cost to sign up was changed from $30 to $25. He no longer paid an hour, now it was only $ 15. In addition the application shown in the news story was titled Application for Cam- paign Manager. Another document shown was titled the P.S.I. Board Organization. no longer used these documents when I became involved. The application was a generic employment application. The P.S.I. Board Organization was changed to the obviously hastily prepared Call Guide, (I say, obviously hastily prepared, because the number of grammatical and spelling errors in the new version) Channel 4 ran a story on Thursday, Sept, 10 showing an attempt to serve the Cease and Desist order on Zitting. He would not come out of his house on camera. In fact, he called the police concerning the televi- sion stations harassment. Then he would MBA Students Seek Improved by Judy Conner Forum staff writer got a student in her office or she is talking to employers on the phone, said Fuller. Westminster graduates and MBA students need help finding jobs in their fields, according to MBA student Doug Fuller. d Fuller said students need services in order to handle the diverse student body needs. Westminster has a Career Resource Center to aid students who need career assistance, but the facilities are overwhelmed by the number of seniors, current graduates, and alumni who are seeking job placement I know Karen Despain, director of placement does an outstanding job, but its really frustrating when you are trying to get in to see her and you cant because she's better-develope- Thomas Maynard Junior, Computer Science The one thing I enjoy the most about Westminster is the small class sizes. Overcrowding is not a problem on this campus. I have encountered, as a former student of a large university, class sizes wifh 100 or 200 students. I specifically came to Westminster for small class sizes. I came to Westminster to get a better quality education. I get more one on one interaction with the professor rather than his graduate teaching assistant. Its always nice to know the professor on a first name basis. Fullers suggestion is to find more people to help the students. He said that Westminsters reputation is built on the quality of the student body, but if they are not being represented, it makes it very difficult to place people in good positions. Westminster is in a unique position in Utah. It has an excellent reputation. Almost like if you mention you are ah MBA from Harvard people listen, said Fuller. MBA Senator Wayne Carey agrees. You dont realize how many Westminster alumni are out there, said Carey. There are bank presidents, CEOs, and others in powerful and helpful positions, and if you not come out to face the police. He came out after the cameras left and was served the order. I called him for a comment on the Cease and Desist order only to have him hang up on me. Last week I described the daily free flight lessons offered by Zitting. A local flight school told me that Zitting had recently ceived his pilots license. They told me he is not certified as a flight instructor. Who was going to teach the flight lessons? No one at this flight school, or any other flight school I talked to, had any knowledge of their struetors working for the Public Service Institute. Only one school had even heard of him and the Public Service Institute. I tried to interview Zitting twice, he hung up on me both times. Zitting called the Forum office and left a message on the an-swering machine. The message was that I had been representing myself as a reporter for this newspaper. He suggested contact- ing the newspapers legal department. He again called the Forum office after hanging up on my request for a comment on the Cease and Desist order. He asked our edi- Continued on pg. 9 re-$- 25 in-Zitti- of Assistance In Job Search mention you graduated from Westminster, youll be surprised with the places you can go, he said. The groundwork for more resources has been laid, said Carey. A.S.W.C. donated $8,000 toward the remodeling of the Career Center and also has hinted about a network that is about halfway completed but not necessarily public yet Carey welcomes MBA students to get in touch with him if they are concerned about the program or classes. He and Carol McEntee are the A.S.W.C. representatives of the MBA program, and both are willing to discuss the program. Fuller also suggests having an alumni data base on line for students to make con nections. The network would create more responsibility for the students and would provide information for them to be in contact with Westminster alumni who are in each field. Fuller received his undergraduate degree from Westminster in Business Administration and Physical Education. He was a ski instructor for many years but decided to come back for his MBA because he wanted a career change. The MBA program is excellent and the instructors are demanding and talented, said Fuller. He said he Returned to Westminster because he knew he would receive a quality education. Youre not just one Social Security number next to another up here, he said. September 22, 1992 i ng forum Page 3 |
