Show 85TH YEAR; NUMBER 38 SOUTHERN UTAH UNIVERSITY CEDAR CITY, UTAH DsMiavja,, Heaton to uue UL' FEBRUARY 28, 1991 THURSDAY, -- r o SUnited is first party to sweep primary elections, leaving few slots for other General Election candidates BY JAMES SPAINHOWER of The Thunderbird Staff Tomo Ishikawa of the New Dimension Party and Kimber Heaton of the SUnited Party edged out the Premium Partys Paul Speirs and Shawn Marchant of the Simpsons to advance to the March 6 General Elections as candidates for the SUUSA presidency. Finalists for academic vice president are the Premium Partys Will Drury and Victor Christensen of SUnited. Leading the competition for administrative vice president was Sharwan Smith, SUnited, and Victor Christensen, representing the Premium Party. This hasnt happened before as far as I know, said Retta Gale, election committee chair. The more people that you get involved 48 in the SUnited party greatly narrows the chances of pulling all the way through. Other aspects setting this primary apart from those in years past are the voter turnout and ballot collection method. The turnout for this election was 839 students. Last year, there were about 300 students who voted. I believe this was a big improvement, Gale said. Also, students voted in electronic booths, thus allowing for accuracy and rapid counting. The race for senator had some major upsets and some candidates which slipped by their opposition to the finals by a slim margin of one vote. David Heaton, SUnited; Brian Vaughn, Premium; Cheri Dodds, A New Dimension; Nicole Thomas, A New Dimension; Cheryl Lenzer, SUnited; and Dennis Sponer, SUnited, will all advance into the General Elections vying for Arts and Letters senator positions.
