Show FIRE DESTROYS TWO BUSINESS BUILDINGS MONDAY IN BEAVER The first disastrous fire in the business district of Beaver for a number of years occurred Monday night when flames destroyed the old frame building occupied by the Bon-Ton Bon-Ton Confectionery and the Beaver Barber Shop. Passinjr the building at about twenty minutes to twelve o'clock, Jimmie Lindsay discovered the blaze in the storeroom back of the barber shop. He ran to the pool hall and gave the alarm. In a few minutes the city fire hose was on the scene, but trouble was experienced in turning turn-ing on the fire hydrant, as no wrench to fit could be found. The hydrant wrenches were at the home of City Manager Manzione, and by the time they were obtained, the fire had gained great headway. Although a splendid force of water was obtained after the hydrants were opened, it was impossible to save the barber shop. Flames had spread to the confectionery, con-fectionery, but were finally extinguished extingu-ished by the fire-fighters, but not until the building, fixtures and stock had been practically ruined. The third building, containing the dining room, was only slightly damaged. The three buildings were owned by Hyrum White as well as the confectionery con-fectionery and cafe, while the barber shop equipment belonged to Arnold Ashworth and Stan Atkins . The shop was covered by $1,000 insurance. insur-ance. Mr. White estimates his loss on stock and fixtures at $7,000, with $4,000 insurance. The building, one of the land-marks of the town, was insured for $1,500. The origin of the fire is unknown. |
