The conference started out with keynote speaker, Coach Larry Gelwix. Coach Gelwix is the head coach of the Highland rugby team. During Coach Gelwix's 35 years of coaching he has had an amazing record of 404 wins and just 10 losses. Coach Gelwix spoke about the importance of stepping up and being a good leader, who thinks about others before themselves. He also talked about a game plan for good leadership. After Coach Gelwix spoke we split up into breakout sessions. Sixteen different sessions were offered with speakers such as our current Miss Utah Christina Lowe, the UVU student leaders, Rodger Anthony, and the UVU Ballroom Dance Team. Each student had the opportunity to attend two sessions where they learned many things to help them be better leaders. The conference ended with keynote speaker Dan Clark. Dan Clark is an internationally known speaker. He has spoken in all 50 states and 35 different countries, speaking to more than 3.5 million people. Dan talked about how leadership isn't power and authority, but how it's about creating opportunities for others to succeed. High School Costume Ball Richfield High School is holding a Costume Ball October 22, from 9 to 11:30 p.m. Costumes are encouraged but not required. Masks are not allowed. Those attending in costume will be eligible for door prize drawings throughout the evening. Cost is $5 per person. All High School students from Gunnison, Wayne, Piute, North Sevier, South Sevier and Richfield are invited and welcome. This week is National School Lunch Week and the theme is "What's On Your Plate." Gunnison Elementary School decided to celebrate lunch week a week early. Students invited their parents to eat lunch with them last Monday, Tuesday and Wednesday. To help add excitement to the luncheon, little stars were stuck on random cartons of milk. If the students found a star they were able to turn in their empty milk carton for a small toy. The toys were provided by the PTA. According to Principal Grant Hansen, the event was a big success with the school serving 1800 lunches to parents and students in three days. That's 500 more meals than normal. Many thanks go out to the parents who participated. The lunch ladies at GVES are really enjoying their new kitchen and other than a few glitches everything is running smoothly.
