Show Page 8 The Gunnison Valley Gazette Thursday, October 14, 2010 BODY BARN Lady Bulldogs head to play-offs MITCH PETERSON The Gunnison Valley High School girls soccer team just couldn't seem to catch a break during the last week of the regular season. The Bulldogs played well against Region 13's second and third place teams, Parowan and Beaver, last Tuesday and Thursday, but the Rams and Beavers each escaped with a narrow win. That meant the Bulldogs tied with Grand for fourth place in Region 13, and a coin toss would determine which team got the #4 seed and a home playoff game, and which team got the fifth seed and a road playoff game. Grand won the coin toss and now the Bulldogs will head north to tangle with the Liahona Warriors in playoff action this Wednesday, October 13th. Liahona Preparatory Academy is a private school located in Pleasant Grove, but they play their home games at Aspen Elementary School in Orem (945 west, 2000 north) and that's where Wednesday's game is. At Beaver last Tuesday, October 8th, the Bulldogs gave it a good go but the Beavers scored a goal in the game's second minute and another midway through the second half to win it 2-0 on a wet, chilly day. Gunnison goalkeeper BrieAnn Peterson made some great saves, and also stopped a Beaver penalty kick late in the game. Two days later, the Bulldogs hosted Parowan in the regular season finale. It may have been the game of the year as the Bulldogs took the Rams to double overtime, but Parowan scored with less than two minutes left to escape with a 3-2 win. That gives her 26 goals on the year- a Gunnison girls soccer record. The game against Parowan was also senior day for Breanna Young and Clara Scharf. Both players are four-year veterans of the team and pioneers in the sport. They were freshmen during the Bulldog's inaugural season in 2007 and they've been in the lineup ever since. Junior forward Nikayla Allred looks up to Young and Scharf. "They're both amazing. Breanna gives it all she has all the time, and Clara goes until she drops," Allred said. "Even when they're trying to breath and crawling on the ground, they can still play." Freshman Kaitlyn Hyatt agrees. "I'm so proud of both of them," Hyatt said. During halftime of the Parowan game, Gunnison head coach Jaron Jensen presented Young and Scharf, along with their parents, Ed and Jana Young, and Robert and Jennifer Scharf, with a token of appreciation and some very kind words for both players. We'll hear more from Young and Scharf when the season ends, but Jensen wanted to praise their play after the game. "I gave them a job today, and they did it," Jensen said. "That's exactly what I expect from the seniors. It's their season, and they did a sensational job today." Parowan is the second place team in Region 13 and a couple of weeks ago they snapped Millard's 59 game region winning streak when they tied the Eagles. But the Bulldogs weren't intimidated. Sara Nilsson scored on a breakaway in the 10th minute for a 1-0 Gunnison lead, then the Rams tied it at 1-1 six minutes into the second half. Peterson made some tough saves during the second half, but the Rams scored again with about 10 minutes left to take a 2-1 lead. Just one minute later, Nilsson pressed forward with a defender draped all over her and fired a left footed shot from about 12 yards out into the top right corner of the net to tie the game at 2-2 with about seven minutes left. Peterson saved a couple of Parowan shots late in regu- lation, and the teams went to overtime. Neither team scored in the first session but Parowan scored with less than two minutes left in the second overtime and held on to win it 3-2. Despite the loss, coach Jensen liked the team's performance against Parowan. "I'm really proud of the team today," Jensen said. "We still started out a little slow despite the early goal. But they did great. They played for the win instead of the tie. This is the potential we've seen all year long." Nikayla Allred says it was an intense game. "Today was great," Allred said. "We had a real desire to go for the ball today." Allred also had praise for Peterson. "She is the best goalie in the world. I don't know where our team would be without her." Now it's on the playoffs. "Let's go play and have some fun," Jensen said. Game time in Orem this Wednesday is 4 pm. If the Bulldogs win that one, they'll head to Ogden on Saturday, October 16th, to tangle with 2A's top-ranked St. Joseph Eagles.
