Show The Gunnison Valley Gazette Page 4 When investing, don't stop at U.S. border Submitted by DARIN FRANDSEN In less than two weeks, United Nations Day will be celebrated. It's an occasion to highlight and reflect on the work of the United Nations, whose mission is to promote understanding and cooperation among the world's countries. Of course, in an era of instantaneous communications and speedy global travel, we are all connected much more closely than ever before. And that's certainly true in the financial markets, too, because as an investor, you've got a world full of opportunities. Many people, however, still think the U.S. totally dominates the investment scene. But the fact is that U.S. stock markets make up less than half of the total global stock market value, according to the Census Bureau. And that should come as no surprise to you when you consider many of the products you use on a daily basis, from the Hyundai (South Korea) you drove to work to the Nestle Crunch bar (parent company in Switzerland) you snacked on at lunch to the Sony television (Japan) you watch at night. Not only are many strong companies based in the developed countries, but some emerging markets — countries such as China, India, Brazil and Mexico that are characterized by younger, less mature economies — are growing rapidly, which may produce good investment opportunities. Keep in mind, though, that emerging markets do involve investment risks different from those of more developed countries. Securities may be less liquid and more volatile because economic structures are generally less diverse and mature. And by investing internationally, you can gain another key benefit — improved diversification. If you only invested domestically, and a downturn hits us, your portfolio will likely take a hit. But, at any given time, internation- al markets may perform quite differently than the U.S. market. Consequently, if you expanded your investment horizon beyond U.S. borders, your foreign investments could be doing relatively well, even if your American investments were lagging. Keep in mind, though, that diversification, by itself, cannot guarantee profits or protect against loss, though it may be able to help reduce the effects of volatility. While you can gain some benefits by investing internationally, you'll also need to consider the risks, such as political risk. For example, new governments can come in, nationalize companies, drastically change policies or rules affecting commerce, or take other actions that could have a big effect on your investments. You might also encounter currency risk — that is, changes in the value of the U.S. dollar, relative to foreign currencies, could negatively affect the value of your investments. Another factor to consider is the difference in accounting standards between the U.S. and other countries, a difference that can result in difficulty analyzing the true value and performance of foreign investments. You can enhance your portfolio's diversification without investing a lot abroad. If you are considering international investments you may want to limit the foreign exposure to no more than 20 to 25 percent of your overall portfolio, with the exact amount depending on your individual risk tolerance, time horizon and long-term goals. Also, given the more complex issues involved in international investing, you'll want to consult with a professional financial advisor before taking action. But once you've done your "due diligence," don't be afraid to launch your voyage to the world of international investing. You might like what you see on your journey. "This conference comes at a time when the dangers of pornography and the detrimental affects it has on relationships, families, and society is becoming more evident" said Pamela Atkinson, Chair of UCAP. "People need to be informed and given the resources and tools to protect themselves and their families." We are pleased to bring the efforts of UCAP to more people throughout the state of Utah and surrounding communities. The purpose of this conference is to educate people about problems related to pornography, provide resources and support, and teach people what they can do to promote community standards that will safeguard children and families. UCAP is pleased to have presenting at the conference a distinguished group of experts discussing a variety of important issues, including: Mark Chamberlain, PhD & Geoff Steurer, MS, LMFT, authors and therapists discussing "Love You, Hate the Prom; Healing a Relationship Dam- aged by Virtual Infidelity" Ken Knapton, cyber safety expert and author discussing, "Cyber Safety: Digital Responsibility for Parents and Youth" Jeffrey J. Michelle Torsak, Vice President of Programing, KSL 5 Television & KSL Newsradio, will wrap up the ThE Outdoor Report Rifle deer hunt shorter this fall You might see a few more young bucks when Utah's general rifle buck deer hunt starts Oct. 23, 2010. But you'll also have fewer days to take one. Utah's most popular hunt will be shorter this year. Anis Aoude, big game coordinator for the Division of Wildlife Resources, says if you're hunting in northern Utah—where the winter was mild this past winter—you could see more young bucks. If you're hunting in southwestern Utah, where deep snow covered the deer's winter range, you might see fewer young bucks. Aoude says the number of mule deer in Utah is holding steady at just over 300,000 deer. The number of bucks wildlife biologists saw after last fall's hunting seasons averaged about 16 bucks per 100 does on the state's general-season units. When you can hunt this fall depends on two things: your age and the area you choose to hunt: On most of the state's units, those over 18 years of age can hunt for five days, from Oct. 23 to Oct. 28. Those who are 18 years of age or younger can hunt for nine days, from Oct. 23 to Oct. 31. There are five units, however, where all hunters—regardless of their age—may hunt for only three days. The hunt on the following units in the following regions runs from Oct. 23 to Oct. 25, 2010: • Northern Region Cache unit Ogden unit • Central Region Oquirrh-Stansbury unit • Northeastern Re- BRP OPEN HOUSE EVENT SATTERWHITE Family. While approving rules for Utah's 2010 hunts, members of the Utah Wildlife Board decided to shorten the season on the units. They made their decision after learning about the number of bucks per 100 does on the five units. Utah's statewide deer management plan says action must be taken to increase the number of bucks per 100 does on units that fall below an average of 15 bucks per 100 does for three straight years.
