ogan in 1959 and then after a career as executive secretary She first worked for Thiokol where she was trained then for Utah State University Then following a respite from that work for the work of raising their five kids she again worked as a secretary to the Dean of Students and President of the College of Santa Fe Finally before the move to Oak City in 1985 she helped with the bookkeeping end ol a hook keeping and accounting firm the family ran for six years in New Mexico where as Jed says “We never made any Carol until slatted money bookkeeping” All this happened while Jed was moving around the country after taking a degree at USU in Animal Science and then a masters in Environmental Science at Tulane University in New Orleans Finally they ended up in Santa Te lor twelve years but Carol’s desire to live in Utah again and Jed’s chances at work with Millard County precipated the move back home and the purchase of the Main Street store from Leon and LaRue Alldredge Other owners structure billing itself as the Oak City Mall would have to conclude the owners have a sense of humor In fact that is true but an inspection ot the historic old store on Main Street reveals that it might just live up to its status Along two cozy aisles local ovvneis Ld and Carol Finlinson have pasked not only the typical candy grocery and dry good items but videos books (maybe the largest stock and selection in the county) batteries and oil Salt Lake City newspapers genealogical supplies a copy machine greeting sards fishing tackle office supplies and a catalog depaiimcni oi anything else you might need Aon can also at the gas pumps outside In short the (micro) mall has "eveivilung liom soup to nuts ansi holts and nails" as led puls u After four and years as owners in partnership with their five children the Finlinson’s have come to view their store somewhat as a since as Jed soberly admits “Sometimes I’m surprised we’re still in business” This observation is based on his historical knowledge that literally dozens have come and gone before him after testing the waters of the retail market in Oak City In fact two relatives proceeded him In the Oak City history Echoes of the Sage and Cedars Margaret White Roper records that Jed’s Great Aunt lydia L Finlinson owned the operation at its present site for at least two decades prior to her selling in 1954 She is remembered as one of the most successful merchants to ever grace Main Street Jed who was born and raised only a block from the old store fondly remembers going to Aunt Lydia's and pulling rope up through the floor fiom the basement where it was stored "If dropped the rope before it was measured and cut would have to run down to the basement and poke it up through the hole again” he said In addition to Lydia Jed’s Grandmother Eliza was also an Oak City merchant doing a brief stint with another operation known as Canyon Service in 1946 so its definitely in the blood for the inlinsons Jolley’s Western
