Show October Thursday, 20, THE l9$4. DEMOCRATIC RALLY AT BRIGHAM CITY nn ' r ' ' Powers Judge Holds Gre&t i Editor ' 'I1"1 ' V Fourth Amidst Enthusiasm; . Journal : While the cause of improved Mr. has been Roosevelt is shaking hands with himself and exchanging congratulations on his nomination, and Mr. Fairbanks is shaking bands with the country in view of his having been named by the Republican party for the vice presiden-- 1 cy, the lion. Alton Ef. Parker is quietly awaiting the result of the popular vote at the coming election to determine if the progressive spirit of the new century is powerful enough to usher into power that party whose platform and principles advocate and promise to defend all the rights 'and interests of the American nation from' all and every .influence of autocracy and despotism that is seeking to undermine the Consti tution of this great country. The Hon. 0. W. Powers addressed' a large and enthusiastic audience in the opera house here fast night and his masterly oration was well received and appreciated by both Democrats and Republicans, and after listening to such eloquent, forceful and unanswerable arguments as those delivered by Judge Powers last night, it will be very embarrasing fpr any person to findcany justifiable reasons' why he should vote the Republican ticket at the coming ejection. Judge Powers stated that the Republican campaign is being carried ou in this state by .the aid of vituperation and abuse very poor weapons to be used by any party which hopes to succeed. Judge Powers boldly and earnestly refuted ctrtain statements made and published by the Logan Republican of a recent date in which that paper had accused him( Judge Powers) of being in league with Senator Kearns and other leaders of the Republican cuts were departy. These nounced by the speaker as abso, lute falsehoods. The prosperity that has prevailed throughout- the count) y during the past few years is not due to, nor the result of, any legislation enacted by tMb Republican party, but has resulted from natural causes and resources, such as the wonderful increase of the gold output in Alaska and other places which has been coined intoTmoney'and placed in circulation throughout the country, creating more business and furnishing employment to more people. This,' together with the large and, bounteous crops and openig, ofnew markets forsanu business conditions in many directions. , to referred .much The Judge legislation that had been enacted by the Democratic party, which has proved of Ji&ting benefit to the country and traced some panics of the past to former , Republican legislation. , The Newland s irrigation Iqw, though passed, by a Republican congress and signed by a Republican president, originated from the Democratic party. Judge Powers, with facts and figures, proved that the Roosevelt administration has been one bf extravagance to the extent of over $2,000,000,000 more than the Mcf Kinley administration. The democratic party of Box Elder heldita convention yesterday and named its ticket for county officers for the next two years. Tlje ticket is considered a strong one, the nomipees being from nearly all over the county. The new Journal is much appreciated by all its readers here, as, like the new woman, it is up to date. Respectfully yours, J. B. Brigham, October 16, 1904. MILLVILLE. MATTERS Editor Journal: There was a Republican rally at this place on Friday evening, October 14. The visiting speakers were: James H. Andersen and brother, of Salt Lake, with Joseph Knowles, nominee for commissioner, and Davy Roberts, nominee- for the legislature. The biggest part of the audience were only d about being citizens. They commenced their meeting by Davy singing a Sunday school song, after which Joseph Knowles was introduced. His Rpeech was but short, but he told those present he was, going to be elected commissioner and that he would treat all people alike. A few short remarks from J. H. Andersens brother followed, after which came another Sunday school song, after which James H. Andersen,- - of Salt lkp,::was In' troduced. He landed President Roosevelt up to the highest point, there being no one, in his estimation, to equal him for the, posi- tion of president of the --United States, although he was a man of war.. The speaker claimed that the Newland s irrigation law was in reality Theodore Roosevelts, for he dictated" ! Sutherland in the- - formation- - of the princi pal points of said bill 4,. Utah State Journal. f Shocking Death. v Yesterday morning, Mary, the wife of Morgan Kpapp, hanged herself while under a spell of ' temporary insanty.1 When the sad, sad news spread, the whole cityiwas plunged in ihtehse sorrow. ; , All during Wednesday J night, Mrs. Knapp dept unusually sound. About daylight, she complained of a fluttering heart, by chills, fler husband got up, lighted-- ' the fire, and requested his wife to remain in bed. This she could not do, however , so - she, too, arose. While breakfast was being prepared, Mrs. Kftapp dipped quietly from the roomv unknown to the members of the family. A ' few minutes later, when her absence was noticed, Mr. Knapp, becoming alarmed, hastened from the room and to the barp, the door of which stood dightly ajar. Looking in, he Baw a terrible and heart-rendin- g sight. There, standing upon her feet, with a rope around her neck and tied to a beam of the barn, was his wife, cold in death. Death had come from strangulation, as no bones of the neck were broken. Dr Rich was immediately summoned, but life had become extinct long before his arrival.
