With government irrigation, fund which will be by the end of the resent fiscal year in thelneieh-jorhoo- d of $25,000,000 this work must be recognized as one of the very large interna) improvement of the country. Although irrigation opcrationsare confined large-- y to the sixteen arid and sem; arid western states, the eastern part of the country must be more or Jess interested for several reasons. Men are constantly moving westward looking for new homes where they can earn a livelihood, or become land owners, while business men are interested in seeing a developmen of the west which will afford them wider lome markets for their manufactured products. The changing of he'westem desert s"1nto "tens "of thousands of new and productive small farms will not only reliev-- . some of the overcrowcted section1 t the east but will simulate business of all descriptions, just as the opening of the great Mississippi Valley provided a market for the American manufacturer such, as Secretary Wilson says, as can be found in no other part of the world. . , Already the Geological Survey has designated some .fifteen large irrigation projects throughout the where huge impoumVn ? west dams and ditches which will be at large as rivers are to be constructed. WorkTs already commenced on some of these and the next Jtwo or three years will see the national irrigation policy in full operation. The $25,000,000 now practically available for irrigation construction, is by ho means the limit of this work since the fund is constantly growing through the sales of western public lands, and as soon as the first irrigation work is completed, the cost of its construction will begin to come back into the fund for use on 'some other iro.jec. It is not intended that the government shall give away the irrigation works. What government land.is pkced under irrigation will be given the homesteader free, conditional only upon his residence and cultivation ; hut the cost 'of putting the water oh the land the construction of the dam be and ihe main s ditches-T-wiborne'' by the settler. - It "is this -- ll PAG , 4 PROJECT JOURNAL, LOGAN, UTAH Y MhW "V coloe; the short fallow is a cap- and the two, with the long jtain, ! preach is privates. t Well, well, said my friend, All veterans, eh!
