Show PIONEER OF SOUTHEAST UTAH SAN word has been received ui moab ot the death at san deeo on january 26 of jack silvey a pioneer of southeastern utah mr mihey is an uncle of R J fletcher end mrs don taylor f moab for a number of years r he had resided in southern califor na death resulted from heart trouble from which he had suffered fox several smiths internment wa I 1 at the I 1 0 0 F and masonic aeme ten at san dieco mr silvey was born at duncan falls near Zany illo ohio july 3 1852 he left ohio in august and settled in johnson and saline counties missouri where he remain cd until the summer of 1873 in that year he responded to the call of the west and went to oro city now known as golo where he followed mining and his trade as a carpenter in 1880 he went to tombstone ariz and in june of the next he returned to colorado while at rico colo he and others received 1 word of the biff indian fight at the heid of little castle valley twenty miles northeast of moab twelve white men were killed by the indians in this battle and according to the word received at rico the remainder of the band of whites were surround ed by the redskins red skins volunteers ere asked for to go to the assistance of the whites A company of 75 men of which sir silvey was a member left at once for the la sal moun bains but on arrival there found that the indians had all left the district and scattered out this ended the indian depredations for a time in june 1882 jack silvey with his father and brothers arrived at what is now old la sal where they filed on homesteads the entire silvey family resided there for a number of ears and southeastern utah has been their home and headquarters since then jack silvey engaged in the cattle business and at one time was one of the largest individual cattle owners in southeastern utah the great drought of the late eighties and early nineties put many cattlemen out of business several sold out the remnants of their herds in 1896 among them mr silvey mr silvey followed the life of a pioneer with its anany hardships and disappointments all his life news of his death will be received with keen regret among his old friends and associates throughout southeastern utah |
