W Shafer Jr at the I age of 84 years Mrs Shafer was as born in Indiana June 27 1826 1526 and came to Salt Sal Lake City in 1849 She lived at Nauvoo Ill Dl for some time before It i was settled by the Mormons and an island In the Mississippi river still bears her maiden name Castro Catro having been named by her family In the early da days s Four sons and two daughters Orson W W. John H. H Oliver Olver and Frank Fran Shafer and Mrs V. W. R. R R. Smith and Mrs John W. W Snell are living S Dorothy infant daughter daught r of or Mr and Mrs Charles Chares H. H died this morning moring The funeral services will wi be private and will wf be held at o'clock at the Allcott Alcott funeral parlors 54 South Main street Interment will wi bein bo be boIn boin in Mount Olivet S Mrs Bathsheba Smith president of the Relief society of the Mormon church and for many y years ars a prominent worker Inthe in inthe inthe the church died Tuesday at the home of her daughter Mrs Irs Clarence Merrill 1275 Browning avenue Mrs Smith was wa 88 years ears of age Three months ago she ehe suffered a stroke of ot paral paralysis which had practically confined her to her bed ever since and for days prior to death she I was wa in a a. state of coma She was born bor May 3 1822 at Harrison Harrson county West Vest Virginia In 1840 she moved I with her parents to Nauvoo and July 25 1841 she was married maried to George A. A Smith then the youngest youngest of the twelve apostles He was a first cousin to the Prophet Joseph Smith Mrs Smith reached Salt Lake with a party part of Immigrants Im urn- fn- fn migrants in iii October 1849 She belonged to to the first Relief Belief society organized at Nauvoo March 17 1812 1842 where the Prophet Joseph presided She officiated In the Nauvoo temple acted as s a first counselor to President Rachel Grant in inthe inthe inthe the Relief society of the thirteenth ward of this city was a counselor to Mary v ar I. I Horne Home In the tho Gospel Retrenchment association asso asso- elation in the fourteenth ward and acted as treasurer of ot the Relief society of the Salt Lake stake She also for years worked in the endowment house and was one of the board of directors of the Deseret hospital hospital For years year she was treasurer of the Seventeenth Ward Yard Relief society of oC which she was subsequently president In October 1901 she was selected by the president of the church to preside over the relief societies of all the world orld and she held this position until her death |
