A Williams secretary and treasurer George A. A Hone Herman Harms state chemist Willard Wiard Hansen state dairy and food commissioner Bad at Bear River The warnings arc the result of oC investigations hives hives- made mado by the bureau and b by Mr Chambers last Jast week weel and yesterday Last week wiek they found Cound deplorable conditions among the ducks at the mouth of or the Jordan river but they decided to extend their search thinking that perhaps the trouble was limited to the mouth of the Jordan Yesterday they visited the mouth of the Bear river ri er and found conditions conditions con con- per pel cent worse wore than at the mouth of oC the tho Jordan For miles mies said Willard Viard Hanson Hansen state state commissioner we saw nothing but butone ono one mass of oC dead ducks We went from Salt Lake to Brigham City and then went overland to the mouth of the Bear river No Ko 3 3 which empties Into the south bay o of Great Salt lake We covered five O miles in a boat hoat and must have seen hundreds of or thousands of dead and dying dying dy dy- dy- dy ing Ins ducks It I is almost impossible to imagine such a condition Not only ducks were found Cound but also sea gulls tulls and cranes and all al kinds of wild wid water at r fowl fowl We Wo had read In one of or tho the local papers the report that the conditions at the Bear river were not bad but It certainly was a mistake Herman Harms state chemist who went on the trip said this morning moring Comparatively Mild Mid Here Hero The Tho conditions at tho the mouth muth of ot the Jordan are are very mUd mild mid as compared with those at the mouth of tho Bear river I cannot say what the cause of the trouble is but It seems to be a cholera which spreads very rapidly and kills IcIs tho birds oft off or In a very few Cew hours after they arc are taken sick silt It It was thought at first that stagnant water was tho the cause but this theory Is blasted by the fact that the water at the Bear river is clear and fresh It I is my opinion that It I cear would be very dangerous for any person to cat oat any wild JIll wid ducks until conditions chango change As Aa the flocks fly fy along an occasional one will wi drop as though shot eliot A mass meeting of sportsmen will wi beheld bo be I held tonight at tho the Commercial club at which the proposition of postponing the season will wf be bo discussed There seems to bo no doubt on the part of the sportsmen that the opening at least willbe will willbe wi be called caled off by all al the gun clubs and that means that pot hunters and persons persons per per- sons soils not belonging to the tho clubs cubs wilt will wi have but very little If any shooting Fred W. W Chambers says says that the sportsmen sportsmen sports sports- men he believes have enough patriotism to refrain from any shooting If I they do not he says they stand a chance o of getting getting get get- ting cholera or some other disease which will wi make them wish they had been a trifle patriotic The probable outcome of the meeting tonight will wi be the postponing of the opening of the season until about November November Novem Novem- ber her 1 and the confining of the shooting to morning moring doves and quail Quai City Aso Also Prohibits Prohibit Dr Samuel G. G Paul city health commissioner commissioner com coin missioner also issued an order prohibiting prohibit prohibit- ing the sale of wild ducks geese and snipe this morning moring It I reads as follows During the last month large numbers of wild wid ducks geese and snipe which Inhabit the streams and ponds in the I vicinity of this city have died from some disease not yet et fully determined The board of or health of oC Salt Lake City has I made a number of tests of oC the wild wid fowls and Is engaged in this work at the present time The result of the tests however have hae brought forth but little Information of C value excepting that the fowls are diseased to such an extent asto as asto asto to render them unfit for human food foo The ducks geese gecse and snipe snip when dressed do not show any signs whatever of disease and for this reason It I would be an easy matter for unscrupulous game hunters to place on the markets of this city wild wid fowls which have either died led from disease or were In a sickened condition condition con con- diton when captured capture Owing to the conditions existing as stated above the board boar of health of Salt Lake City does hereby issue an ar order prohibiting the sale of any wild wId ducks geese or snipe whatsoever in the markets markets mar mar- of this city until such time when they shall be found fit for human food by this department May Not Ship Birds In The order was issued this morning after acer I Dr S S. G. G Paul city health commissioner had had a conference e with the ci city attorney attorney ney who Informed the health commissioner commissioner commis commis- that It was within the power of the board to issue iEsue such an order and to see that it was strictly enforced The Tho order applies apples with equal force to wildfowl wild wildfowl wid fowl shipped into Salt Lake Lakes City from other states Dr T. T B. B Beatty Beatt se secretary of the state board stated this morning that a a. critIcal critical crt crt- crit crit- ical lal and exhaustive examination as to the disease and its Is causes and effects is being made b by some of the best men in the state Dr Paul said today that FO so I far no one seemed able to tell tel just what was the matter mater with ith the ducks and other wild wid fowl Cowl It I had not been determined he said whether or not the tho eating of them would be fatal to a human but the tho city health board did not feel like letting the people of this city take any chances just because some hunters might want to tomake tomake tomalee make malee a few dollars Dr Paul said that special attention would be given to watchIng watching watch watch- ing big the local market for anyone who ho attempted attempted attempted at at- tempted to sell sel an any wild id fowl as long as the order was in effect and that in every case of violation the health board would prosecute the case to the limit Guesses as a to Cause Ma Mayor or Bransford stated this morning moring that from the reports which he had re received ro- ro he did not believe beleve that tho the cause of the death of the ducks in the neighborhood neighborhood neighborhood neighbor neighbor- hood of the mouth of the Jordan was wa due to the emptying of the sewer into the river but that he would probably give Instructions to have the sewer turned into the settling ponds as well wel as to havo the city chemist make an analysis I Io I o of the water both above e ab and below the outlet of the sewer with wih a view of determining determining determining deter deter- mining whether or not the is Inan in an any way to blame for the condition at the mouth of the river It I has been argued ared by some that the condition especially ly at the mouth of the tho Jordan Is due to a shortage of 0 water and that if it plenty of water were turned down the river the con condition iton would quickly quick quick- ly change Would Be Costly to Pump Cit City Engineer George F. F said this morning that at the present time the river was ws carrying second feet of water There is less than fifteen second feet of water running In the surplus surplus surplus sur sur- plus canal he says lie He was asked if i It St were not possible to Increase the flow fow of or water In the tho river riverby riverby b by pumping more water ater from the Utah lake and said aid that it was but that he ho did not believe beleve It I would relieve the situation to any great extent If at all al At present five fie of the seven big pumps are working They are pumping second feet of oC water Should tho the other ether two pumps be he put in operation this flow would be in increased increased in- in creased b by second feet To put in operation op op- op- op these thee two extra pumps would cost the city at the rate rte of oC a month from now until October 1 when hen the pumping stops at least as far as tho the farmers aro are concerned Should the city keep the pumps going after that date It I will wi be a acost acost acost cost of a month In view of the fact fat that it has not been en demonstrated that It I is more water that the tho ducks need there Is little likelihood that the et city will mI go to this expense |
