Show 1-riday, January 24, 1992 i ne signpost ports Mitchell shines as Shrine All-Star By ANDREA PETERSON Asst. Sports editor of The Signpost Weber State senior Geoff Mitchell has a smile on his face for almost two weeks now. During the second week of the quarter, while the rest of us were in class, Mitchell was in Palo Alto, California. He was there to show off his talents, to brighten the day for some less fortunate children and to do something he that comes naturally, help win a football game. Mitchell played in the 67th Annual East-West Shrine Classic and is only the fourth player in the history of Weber State football to be invited to play in an All-Star game. This game is a big one for everyone involved. Scouts from NFL teams are there all week watching the players, it is a chance for the big-name players to improve their chances of being drafted. It is also a big game for kids at the Shriner's Children's Hospitals, as proceeds from the game go to benefit the hospitals. One of the highlights of the week for Mitchell, as well as the other players, was visiting the Shriners Hospital in San Francisco. "It truly was a humbling experience," Mitchell said. "It made me realize that my trivial aches and pains are nothing compared to Big Sky Conference boasts big time basketball rivals Associated Press Montana is off to its best start since the 1949-50 season with just one loss in 16 games, and the Grizzlies have a chance to fatten their Big Sky Conference record at home this week against two teams that have struggled in the early league FOR SALE MOTORCYCLE! HELP WANTED these kids' burns and lost limbs. They were happy to meet the football players and they put up a courageous front to hide the pain they were in. Talking to them made our day, and although they didn't show it, we knew that we made theirs." Mitchell, along with the other players, was there to play a football game. "Going into the game, we treated it like a real game," said Mitchell. "We wanted to win." They did. The West defeated the East by a score of 14-6. There were some serious big-name college football players in that game. Mario Bailey, the wide receiver from Washington, Mike Pawlawski, the quarterback from Cal and Bucky Richardson from Texas A&M, just to name a few. Don't forget Geoff Mitchell, the running back from Weber State. Who? From where? You know, the guy who was the leading rusher in the game. Our own Wildcat carried the ball 10 times, racking up 52 yards. But Mitchell didn't just run with ball. He caught the ball and he threw some blocks to let other ball carriers get some yards and first downs for themselves. The game had some slightly different rules than a regular game Montana (4-0) hosts Idaho (3-2) Thursday night and Boise State (1-4) Saturday night, with a chance to pull away from runnerup Nevada (4-1). The Wolf Pack has just one game this week, at Northern Arizona Saturday night. Boise State is at Montana State (2-2) Thursday night before the Montana game. The offense had to have two backs in the backfield. There was also a nine-point rule. When one team got ahead by nine or more points, the other team automatically got the ball. The changes in the rules, coupled with the fact that Mitchell was playing a position that was new to him, made the game a little more difficult for him. "The rules were a bummer," said Mitchell. "And they had me blocking against this really big, First Team AU-American Defensive Lineman. I was outclassed in blocking." What did help Mitchell's game was that one of the plays they ran was very similar to a play the Wildcats run with Mitchell carrying the ball. Mitchell knew he would get a fair amount of playing time in the game, but what he did not expect was to start the game. "Touchdown" Tommy Vardell of Stanford was slated to start the game for the West, but suffered a broken collar-bone in the Hula Bowl. About an hour before the start of the game, Mitchell got the call. (ucan) Gymnasts By DOUG LANG Sports writer of The Signpost The stage was set, the Huntsman Center packed with cheering crowds, athletes concentrating on what they had practiced over and over, and Utah ranked 1 in the nation. What it this? Gymnastics are here again. However, this was no ordinary competition. For the first time in the history of Utah's women's collegiate gymnastics, all four major college teams were participating. Never before had three of the four teams been ranked in the top 20 preseason polls. Utah ranked 1, Brigham Young ranked 8, and Utah State ranked 13. As can be expected, the participants were nervous with it being such a big event, for Missy Marlow a 1988 Olympian. Among the top performers were Marlow, along with teammates Kristen Kenoyer and Shelly Schaerrer. From Brigham Young, Korie Jackson; from Utah State, Barbara Zahl; and from Southern Utah, Julie Aguirre. As can be expected necves his team to coast against Eastern, which has won just three of 15 games. "We can't rest on our laurels and. pat ourselves on the back," Abegglen said. "We need to come out and be aggressive. There could be a tendency to come out relaxed and not Classifieds Become a paralegal. Join America's fastest growing profession. Work with attorneys. On the contrary, the Utes were attacking each routine with a vengeance. This was to the liking of Coach Greg Marsden, "last year we tried to be too perfect at times. They said let's let it out and see what happens. We didn't hold too much back tonight." For three of the four teams this was not the first meet for the season. Utah, BYU and Utah State all have had previous meets. For Southern Utah this was their first contest of the year. Many great performances were posted including Missy Marlow who scored a 9.9 on the bars. Marlow was named the all-round champion and the meet MVP. "I definitely have some things in mind to improve on," the Utah seniorsaid. "But this was a good beginning." When the results were tallied, the Utes finished with 194.0. BYU finishing second at 18755, Utah State in third with 185.55 and Southern Utah with 184.0. worry about Eastern because of their record, so we as a staff need to get the team mentally ready." Eastern Washington has lost its last eight games. And leading scorer Carren Wilson, 133 points per game, continues to suffer from a broken toe sustained in November. He played just one minute in last week's two Big Sky games. MISCELLANEOUS TOONES" Ogden's newest dance club! Discounts with student I.D. Check us out or give us a call. 2410Wall Ave. 399-5729.
