Show 4 The Signpost Friday, January 24, 1992 Editorial Letters to the editor Instead of just complaining, writer should offer alternative To the editor, This is in response to Tina Chisolm. (The Signpost, Friday, Jan. 17) Tina, I believe there is a great need for scholarship money for ethnic minorities. As I see it, because America does cater to the white majority, as you stated, it is impossible for an ethnic minority student to compete on a fair basis for scholarship monies. However, I don't think you further the cause by insinuating that the ideas concerning such matters are divided into black vs. white by such a sharp "line." Contrary to popular beliefs, there are non-white people who believe that a scholarship (or job, or anything else) awarded on nothing but the basis of race is wrong. I think you will find that the more educated we become, the fuzzier these lines become. Due to the fact that a major portion of my wife's education came through the teachings of Dr. Daily Oliver and my many "attitude adjustments" since, I like to think that I have "just begun" to become educated in some of these matters. Tina, instead of just complaining, tell us WHY you think these scholarships Gomberg and others much more "in the know" have to say about this issue. Advance all of our educations! Believe it or not, there are a few white folks interested in making the world a better place to live in for ALL of us. Pete Jahsman WSU Alumnus Bill will protect against ignorance To the editor, This is in response to the letter published in the January 10 edition of The Signpost regarding protection for heterosexuals from hate crimes. I am curious to know whether the person who wrote the letter attended the Issues Forum discussion the Weber State marquee advertised. I think not. If heshe had, heshe would know the discussion was focused on some state legislators wanting to exclude "sexual orientation" from a bill proposing stiffer penalties for those who commit violent acts against others based on race, religion, ancestry, etc. The point was made by the representative from Utah Gay and Lesbian Democrats that the bill would, in fact, apply to a crime where a person is attacked solely because heshe is a heterosexual. Statistics show one person out of 10 is a homosexual. Even though I am not, this bill would be sure to protect many people I, and ultimately the rest of us, know and care for. Unfortunately, ignorance and fear as so aptly displayed by the person who wrote the aforementioned letter is precisely the reason such a bill is necessary. I ' .1 9 IT- 8 Atoj ifccxvre "tte lord o Professor challanges JFK conspiracy theory To the editor, As a professional historian, I am concerned that many Americans, apparently including your staff writer Debbi Timson, have decided to obtain their historical "truth" from the movies. Are you, as she, really willing to allow Hollywood to leave "no doubt in your mind about" anything, including "that there was definitely a conspiracy" to kill Kennedy. Inasmuch as Ms. Timson's brief review of JFK in The Signpost (10 Jan., 1992) consisted mostly of questions, and inasmuch as I am not willing to accept Oliver Stone as a historical authority, allow me to ask a few more. Before she became so convinced by Stone's fan ciful film, did Ms. Timson read carefully all 888 sober pages of the Warren Commission Report and the subsequent reports issued by the Select Committee on Assassinations?Does Ms. Timson know that even most conspiracy theorists consider Jim Garrison to be apublicity-seeking extremist, even by their strange standards? Is she aware that independent scientific investigations, most recently summarized on PBS's Nova, have explained away beyond reasonable doubt the so-called "magic-bullet" problem, the so-called "grassy-knoll" gunman, and the "switched-body theory? Why were Garfield and McK-inley killed? If complicated and disturbed lone gunmen killed them, why not Kennedy? Does she know that it is standard practice (right or wrong) to "hide away" files on such matters in order to protect confidential witnesses and "national security" apparati until a prescribed date in the future? Why did the "founding fathers" hide away the files of the proceedings of the Constitutional Convention? Does Ms. Timson think that if the Warren conclusions are indeed lies that they are the Vily lies with which Americans must live? Is Robin Williams really Peter Pan all grown up? Gene A. Sessions Professor of History Magic Johnson's sexual promiscuity is hardly heroic To the editor, To lump Magic Johnson in with the likes of Martin Luther King Jr., Abraham Lincoln and Mother Teresa is an injustice and a travesty. A hero is someone who gives something positive to society. Mr. Johnson has taken life, his own, possibly that of his wife and child and other individuals. Engaging in sexual promiscuity is hardly heroic. It is true that he came forward even though he didn't have too. Admittance does not designate anyone a hero. Jeffery Dayhmer pled guilty to murder. Does that make him a hero? I may be considered "politically incorrect" but I believe in family and traditional values. The "enlightenment" our culture has been experiencing in regards to sexual morals has been a disaster. We have sky-rocketing teen pregnancy; there are more STD's than ever before; families have been destroyed; poverty is higher than it has been since the Great Depression; and nowthere is AIDS. We can thank the sexual revolution for most of this. Mr. Johnson's condition is perhaps the most poignant symptom of our culture'sself-destruction. However, it is just that, a symptom. Our culture's real disease is a loss of sexual morals. This is the very same disease that contributed to the demise, from within, of other ancient cultures. To many individuals my ideologies are archaic and even narrow minded. That which is archaic is often very highly valued. As for narrow-mindedness, when our culture had morals we didn't have many of today's problems. Our culture is sowing what it has reaped. Please, don't accuse me of condemning anyone. The fact is, I care about my fellow man and the world. And that is why the truth must be told.
