Hampers Harvest The heavy snowfall has caught farmers here with many crops 8 till unharvested. Sugar beets are being dug when the ground freeze is the right consistency to bear the weight of the heavy machinery used in harvesting. Potatoes are still in the ground and should not be in any immediate danger of freezing in the ground. Even the birds who normally spend the winters further south have been caught with their feathers down. Killdeers are spotted in groups of picking up gravel along roads. This unusual sight as these birds leave at the first hint of fall. The absence of their lonely cry fills us with nostalgia as we know winter is upon us. They are also the first harbingers of the arrival of spring. The inclement weather has given some of the citizens a short vacation from the busy harvest season. The work has been carried throughout the week including Sundays and all night in some instances. 25-3- 0 Rich Daines, Steven Shinkle, Sheila Smoot, Gena Midgett and Loyde Bott. last weekend to warn them not to attempt to travel there for the deer hunt.
